JoeP
Not quite the same, but yesterday I finally upgraded to IE7 and the 'Clearfonts' (or whatever Microsoft called it) looked most peculiar on my laptop. I turned that setting off and I'm very happy again. The Clearfonts looksed...well...blurred.

esme
well for internet explorer 6 (not sure about other browsers) it depends on what fonts are on the machine, win2k has a slightly different font set to XP so for example looking at a garamond family font on a 2k machine will display a curly font thats very difficult to read but on an XP machine it displays as something like a comic sans font you can override the fonts on the web page by selecting "Tools" then "Internet Options.." from the IE toolbar then click the "Accessibility.." button and check the "Ignore font styles specified on web pages" box then OK all the open dialogues that should guarantee a readable font regardless of the web site
Ginner
next question how do you turn the setting off thought I knew but obviously I dont cheers I've just upgraded to IE7 and found the same problems - blurry text on web pages. You do need to turn off ClearType: "In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, scroll to the Multimedia section Clear the Always use Clear Type for HTML check box, and then click OK. The changes will take effect the next time you start Internet Explorer." Mine took effect immediately.
libuse
Not quite the same, but yesterday I finally upgraded to IE7 and the 'Clearfonts' (or whatever Microsoft called it) looked most peculiar on my laptop. I turned that setting off and I'm very happy again. The Clearfonts looksed...well...blurred. I've had to do the same, and although I really like IE7, I haven't come across anyone who has kept clearfonts on. They've all said it looks blurry and hard to read. Maybe they'll get rid of it in the long run?

fnkysknky
ClearType is designed for TFT monitors and makes use of subpixels to render text better. The problem that you're having is due to their being 2 different configurations for TFT monitors. The subpixels are either arranged RGB (red green blue) or BGR - ClearType in it's default setting presumes the subpixels order is RGB so if yours are BGR then it looks shocking and usually causes a headache Download http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx - it's a utility that lets you pick between RGB and BGR ordering. You'll notice on a CRT monitor that ClearType improves the look of text - that's due to the text being anti aliased as part of the ClearType process. It's not designed to be used on CRTs though. Gave this a go but it made no difference, RGB or BGR. Turning ClearType off seems to work best for me.
