Modem Cabling

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me where I may be able to get Modem cabling..specifically from an ADSL modem to a splitter. I need quite a long length so places like PC world etc are out of the question

Have you tried Maplins opposite Hillsborough barracks?

Also, when you say 'long', how long?

From my experiences here, ADSL gets a bit shirty with long cable reaches - unless you have an electrically quiet environment there's more likelihood of interference to the connection and also long lengths of cable degrade the signal.

There's probably a specification somewhere on the Net that gives you some guidelines.

I have managed to get hold of a 10m length but the distance itself is only maybe above 5 m and not passing close to anything electrical

10m is fine, I think.

I have a 10m run from the router to teh phone socket and it's happy.

When people say 'long' I have visions of 100m stretched across the road to their mate's house!

You'll be better if the cable runs downhill. The electrons flow at the speed of light on a level cable run (about 669,600,000 mph). If your telephone point is upstairs and your computer downstairs, the electrons will speed up by roughly 20-25 mph (depending on the gradient etc), giving you 669600025 mph and faster internet access.

This exceeds the speed of light and actually alters the laws of physics, so just be careful.

And whatever you do, don't kink the cable with a chair....

The packets build up at either side of the kink because of impedance mismatches caused by the compression of the cable.

After a few minutes (less if you're on a 1Mb connection) the insulation can't take it and you get a packet burst all over the place. If you've only been browsing the Sheffield Forum and other nice places it's OK and fairly easy to clean up, but porn sites....or, even worse, the home page of Barney the Dinosaur....OMG....the horror, the horror....

Wow..may thanks for that. As a result I am thinking of getting a 'house tilt'. I figure if I lower the back of the house by 3 metres I should then be able to maintain a level connection between the computer upstairs and the telephone downstairs.

Question - where did you get your 10m cable as I'm moving my PC soon and the old cable isnt long enough!

Cheers in advance
