cloudybay
This is very, very sad news indeed. He was the consummate professional with an incisive yet non aggressive interviewing style the likes of Paxman and his ilk would do well to learn from. His audio diaries, recorded during his illness, were very touching yet inspiring and showed the true spirit of the man. He will be sorely missed. medusa
What a sad loss to the world of radio broadcasting. His gentle voice will be missed.
Cols
I heard the news today on The World at One. Very sad. If his audio diary is repeated then it's well worth a listen.
Phanerothyme
I started listening to WATO about the same time as Nick took over. From then until quite recently and his astonishing return to work after having his leg amputated, WATO was the finest broadcast news bar none - and I rarely missed a broadcast. His analytical rigor, distinctive voice and self-deprecating manner will be much missed by me.

angle20
Yes, a sad loss. I just about remember him on Look North (North West) in the 1970s. The World at One was a programme I'd sometimes listen to purely because he was presenting it. A great radio voice.
