Beakerzoid
News today on ign.... Director Peter Jackson, who filmed the sensational Lord of the Rings, has been informed by New Line Cinema that his services won't be required on the studio's upcoming Hobbit film; the same goes for a potential prequel to LOTR. Peter Jackson has an ongoing lawsuit with New Line over his compensation for making the three LOTR pictures, and he's long held that he'd be willing to make The Hobbit for that studio so long as those disputes got resolved. New Line has apparently stalled attempts to settle the discrepancy between their accounting and that of Jackson's people. The studio had hoped Jackson would drop the case in return for the likelihood of more lucrative income from The Hobbit and other Middle-Earth related projects, but Jackson didn't feel that was a wise course to take. Jackson explained the situation in a statement released to the TheOneRing.net website: "We would have to agree to make The Hobbit as a condition of New Line settling our lawsuit. In our minds this is not the right reason to make a film and if a film of The Hobbit went ahead on this basis, it would be doomed. Deciding to make a movie should come from the heart - it's not a matter of business convenience. When you agree to make a film, you're taking on a massive commitment and you need to be driven by an absolute passion to want to get the story on screen. It's that passion, and passion alone, that gives the movie its imagination and heart." Now that time is running out for New Line to make these films while they can, they've cut Jackson and partner Fran Walsh loose.
FallenAngel6
Thats stupid Jackson worked really hard at making the LOTR films and did a damned good job on them he shouldnt have been dropped and they should have got a kick up their...bums, from dropping him. If they dont pick him back up then i am not watching the film cause i'm a teenager throwing a tantrum so ner. From Fallen. PS: Did it hurt when they dropped him? lol i know sad. Banjo Griner
It's gonna be crap then. What's the mysterious 'prequel'? Possibly 'The Silmarillion'? Bit un-filmable if you ask me.
FallenAngel6
The whaty what??? I think they should have stopped at Lord of The Rings - Return of the king. That would have been a brilliant ending to the trilogy and then they could have made some other books into films, and try not to destroy the book or the film. I know what i'm talking about lol. Banjo Griner
The whaty what??? LOTR was written by a bloke called Tolkien - he also wrote some other books set in the same Universe, including The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. The Hobbit was for kids, LOTR was for older kids, and The Silmarillion was for people who'd lost the plot and wanted to know about the creation of Middle-Earth and Sauron's rise to power and that. I quite like the book, but it'd make a crap film.
FallenAngel6
It sounds it too, i might have to read that. But seriously more films on lord of the rings, some people couldnt even watch the firsts ones because they were too long or way off of the book. Now they are doing the same with the hobbit and that other one that i cant spell. Why cant they imagine something up...i cant imagine lots of things...i have a vivid imagination...like a child... ... ... and i'm crazy. Beakerzoid
If anyone has read the History of Middle Earth series of writings, they will see that there are plenty of ideas for stories set within the Middle Earth setting. The series of books, compiled by Christopher Tolkien, were taken from the various writings that JRR made about the ages of Middle Earth (LOTR is set towards the end of the third age of Middle Earth), and cover the formation of the lands, the wars of the races, the creation of the relics of power (such as the rings), and also other events which took place at the same time as LOTR. Admittedly I am, indeed, a total geek and have read them all....but I don't care. Jackson managed to craft a wonderful vision of Middle Earth, and (minor annoyances aside) captured the look and feel of the settings perfectly. Can another director follow suit, or will this be yet another franchise that swops directors to the detriment of the overall product? I'm not too sure I want to find out! nick2
and The Silmarillion was for people who'd lost the plot and wanted to know about the creation of Middle-Earth and Sauron's rise to power and that. That sounds better than LOTR
Banjo Griner
It is good, but it's a bit heavy. I'm currently re-reading LOTR because I bought the 50th anniversary edition a while back and I haven't read any Tolkien for a few years. After I finish, I reckon I'm gonna re-read The Hobbit and then The Silmarillion - should keep me busy for a bit.
Treacle26
So why have New line and Jackson fallen out? why is he claiming compensation? i don't understand? Can someone explain. I do think that if Jackson isn't going to do the rest then they shouldn't be done at all.
