Help needed with dvd writer not working

I am wondering if anyone has a clue as to what the problem might be. My dvd re-writer wouldn't read dics. The light on the front of it flashed a couple of times but thats all it did. We installed a plain cd rom instead and after a few days this did the same. Just bought a brand new dvd re-writer and it is doing exactly the same thing  We have tried a different lead but no good. I have checked device manager and it has recognised it and says this device is working properly. It says we are using the latest drivers. What else could it be? :help:

Just for starters , Try quiting any unnecessary software that you may have running and see if that makes any difference ,

Try putting an audio CD in and see if it will play it . Assuming you have an audio lead plugged into it .

I tried it with no programs running before coming on here, no joy. I've tried a computer disc and an audio cd in it, both original, still no joy. It opens the door, closes it fine, flashes a couple of times and that's it! If i go to my computer to see what is on the disc it hasn't read it and puts up nothing :( Like I said it did this with my old one too, thats why i bought a new drive

What about booting in safe mode . OR booting from your XP cd when your pc starts ?

Or...

Try booting from a Linux Live CD and see if that can pick up the CD info (at least you'll know whether it's a PC or Windoze issue):).

and do what? According to the computer the dvd drive works fine

Well if it boots ok from a CD then you can pretty much assume it is not a windows related problem !

Just because windows says it's ok , Doesn't always mean that it is .

I have a DVD rom that won't read anything and windows says that it's ok . Yet that thing is dead as a dodo
