Kingmaker2
AVG 7.5 antivirus is probably the best free antivirus out there, there are others like Avast or Avir but for me AVG beats them for simplicity to use, and set and forget automation. The new 7.5 is definitely different from the older 7.1 version so those that haven't got the 7.5 version yet should consider doing so. ZoneAlarm is an excellent free firewall you should install too. Another invaluable free security program is Winpatrol which you can download free from here : http://www.winpatrol.com/ It will warn you if any of your registry settings have been changed or if a new program is trying to launch on start up. I've been using this program very happily for over a year and a half now. This Winpatrol alerted me to a Trojan downloader that tried to run on restarting my computer. If it had not been for Winpatrol I would have run that trojan and my whole computer would have been infected. Thanks Scotty! (That's the little black dog icon that displays in your taskbar to show that Scotty's on patrol.)

kurlymunky
I use Avast on a few of my PCs and it works very well. I've heard it doesn't do too well in tests but I've never had any complaints about it. It works as a basic firewall too. I've used AVG in the past but I found the message it puts on your emails makes you look a right cheapskate. Is there any way to disable this? A reghack or anything similar. sccsux
Is there any way to disable this? A reghack or anything similar. Yep.. Simply open the control centre Click email settings, then properties Then click the Configure button Deselect the Certify Mail option:thumbsup:
kurlymunky
With it being free I didn't think it would be that easy. Thought they'd make it harder to disable their only advertising.

You mean the "Checked by AVG Free edition" That only appears on incoming messages and not on your outgoing messages, so your recipients don't actually see it. You can check it by sending an e-mail to one of webmail accounts ( I assume you have a Yahoo or Hotmail account)

You're wrong, you know. The outgoing message can be turned on or off by following the instruction I detailed above:thumbsup:

The outgoing message can be turned on or off by following the instruction I detailed above:thumbsup: Well I just checked my settings and both incoming and outgoing are certified but only my incoming has the AVG message. I have just sent an E-mail to my Yahoo account and there was NO AVG message. Have you actually seen the AVG message on an outgoing mail? As far as Yahoo is concerned I don't think I was wrong. I'll try sending an e-mail to my hotmail account and I'll let you know what happens. Just sent myself an e-mail to my hotmail account and there is NO AVG message. So the AVG message doesn't seem to go out on outgoing e-mails afterall certainly not using the 7.5 version and Opera.
