brassman
The missus has just come in from doing the shopping and says there's been what looks like a major accident outside Direct Cars at Halfway. A tram has pushed a car some 40ft or so down the tracks... possibly someone gone through a light that they shouldn't have? More police / fire / ambulance personnel than you can shake a stick at. Not a pretty sight by all accounts.
juliew
A tram seems to have rammed a car loads of fire engines and air helicopter parked on road near dircect cars looks really serious
Heyesey
If a tram's hit a car head on, I'm surprised that there's enough left of it for anyone to tell it WAS a car.

Darbees
As matter of interest does anyone know the stopping distance of a tram compared with a car? Highway code says 75 feet at 30mph for a car. Does a tram have anti lock brakes?
brassman
I would guess it has antilock brakes. They also have sanding gear to increase rail adhesion (you can see the sandboxes under the front seats). One of the problems with the tram initiating an emergency stop at, say 40mph, is the mess that could be caused in the passenger area where no-one is fastened down. It's bad enough when they slam the anchors on at low speeds
Macca
Are there any of those web cams up that way?

Emergency stop would be same for a bus regarding passengers flying everywhere esp if they were standing up and they would go flying anyway if it hit something abruptly. RichD
What use would a tram have for anti-lock brakes? They run on rails - they're not going to need protection from steering lockups at all.

ABS is primarily to shorten stopping distance and not specifically to allow steering. I would have thought that it would be more useful on a tram than a car since it is running on a slippery surface.
