Whats a bus stop?

Similarly for all BMW drivers, what's a bus lane?

Real socialists want equality for all.

Instead of envy for those with more than you, why not assume till otherwise proven that the person with the goods has earned them properly?

If you earn enough , or win the lottery why should anyone begrudge you?

Thats a very silly assumption!

Inverse snobbery makes me mad too; this city seems to applaud state dependancy and despise enterprise.

BTW I bet the Ferrari driver works for the public sector....

I agree babychickens, it would be 'my plot is beside the river, pay me to get water' - human nature at its finest! Communism has been tried and it doesn't seem to me to be a model for a thriving and honest society. It just appears to replace one set of people in charge with another set, often more corrupt and totally committed to the politics of envy! I worked beside a bloke in the 60s, he thought that everyone should be paid about the same, and money should have a 'spend by' date on it. In his world there would be no saving - just spend as you go. His theory was that everyone would have a similar standard of living. However, his life style included quite a lot of fags and booze, and he seemed to really resent people who wanted to save money or spend it on things like buying a house? His thinking made an impact on me as an impressionable youngster - I thought it was completely daft.

Whats a honest society. Do you feel that you live in one?

interesting thread.

there is a lot of inverse snobbery in sheffield and it stems from the fact that the huge majority of us are from fine working class stock and that is nothing to be ashamed of. thing is though there was a time when no matter how hard you worked you couldn't advance socially, intellectually or advance up the social ladder.

we are essentially a city of sons and daughters of slave and servants. this means that basically anybody who has stuff and is doing well is looked on as being a bit 'lord of the manor' and resented because its assumed that they must be exploiting people to be where they are.

give it a couple of generations and it'll be bred out of us. but to be honest i doubt that will be a good thing. theres nothing wrong with a bit of humility. my sister for example lives in a four bedroom house where all the rooms are en suite, my 6 year old nephew has his own bathroom!, and she is a bit snobby. a few months ago she vowed never to speak to me again when i told her you can have all the bathrooms you like, all the cars you like and go wherever you like but you'll always be a coal miners daughter from rotherham.

this is also prevelant on an intellectual scale as well. the sad truth is we live in a world where idiocy is a virtue. people who read or are intelligent are mocked, take a look around you. how many people read a book on the bus to work in the morning? how many of your colleagues can't talk about anything other than reality tv, soap opera's, football or where they went drinking at the weekend? when was the last time you had an interesting or stimulating conversation with someone? i don't mean to patronise but the days where you locked intellectual horns with someone are gone. moronic people are taking over. why is jackass popular? that is all the proof you need.

on a seperate note bill bryson thinks that britain should have been the test ground for communism because "...the british are used to going without, good in a crisis, enjoy queueing , make excellent jokes about authority without challenging it and have lived under a dictatorship.." (paraphrased slightly) he may well be right.

I was once in a pub in Low Edges and a bloke in there was talking to my brother about a bloke he knew who was a house burglar. He seemed quite positive about him saying that he was a decent bloke, because he "didn't steal from people like us." I was disgusted with his attitude in thinking that it's ok to steal as long as you pick on people wealthier than yourself.
