BEWARE!! Cowboy Carpet fitter in town !

Recommended Posts

Hi, Apologies for the long post but please bear with me!

Just moved in sheffield and bought a house. Bought new lino floor for kitchen from Carpet Web in Crookes, had the floor boarded as it was uneven, I helped him move the fridge away from the room. The fitter layed the floor over the top of boards and then moved the fridge back into place without my help. At the time it looked like there were dents into the floor but the fitter said that they would go when the floor warmed up. We left it for a few days and the dents were still there but on closer inspection they were tiny nicks in the lino, even worse, when you sit at the table you can see a rip around the fridge! There is also damage to the wood of the newly fitted kitchen and the lino was not laid properly and won't lay flat.

I went to the shop with my gf and the owner emptied the customers out and had 2 staff stand by the door to stop anyone enter... I asked that he replace the lino with some that's fit for purpose as the damage is in the kitchen doorway and he laughed and said no way because I had sabotaged the floor myself, but he would send the fitter to look, apparently the fitter had gone back to the shop after fitting, fully aware of the rip and said that I had put the fridge back and done it myself. Everyone I have spoken to since says he should have put it on a bit of board to protect the floor before taking out the fridge...

The fitter arrived with his 'bodyguard' and stuck the bits of loose floor back and cut some bits off (very roughly) and looks like he had done something. It was still a very poor job, even my grandma could do better! I wrote him a letter saying I was not happy and was unwilling to pay the balance and offered to let him take the floor away or replace it, but he sent final reminders for payment until we got a letter today saying that we should either get an independent opinion of the floor or let them have a look in the next 7 days before they start court proceedings. What if this happened to an old lady you know? How can they handle this ? It's not all about money, everytime I go to the kitchen and look at the carpet, it makes me very unhappy  ...

What should I do? Pay up and have a torn, damaged floor in my newly refurbished house, get them round so they can make up more lies about what they have and haven't done, get an independent fitter in to see the floor but then have them ignore what he says?

:help: Any help and advice would be appreciated, the clock is ticking and my gf and I both work 6 days a week.

Thanks!!

R

DOnt pay until they have done a satisfactory job!! Once you pay you'll never see them again by the sounds of things. ok you might be your deposit down if they dont finish the job properly but they'll also be ££ down which helps ease the pain.

I agree I think the legal threat is probably just to scare you.

As I understand it, if you were taken to court it would be small claims court, and if your lost then you would just have to pay the outstanding balance. So you would be no worse off going to court than if you paid right now.

You should check this though, because I'm no expert. As pointed out above, Citizens Advice are the people to see.

Call your local Trading Standards agency, they will be able to offer you advise and may even come and check it themselves. Also mention that you will be posting details about their shoddy service and may even go to your local paper. This will seriously effect their business, so may get them to look at the problem and take it more seriously.
