Fishers Ironmongers

My dad used to work at Fishers (which I believe was on Waingate??) just after the war and was manager for the last few years there, before leaving to open his own hardware shop on Margetson Crescent at Parson Cross. Is there anyone who remembers Fishers and can tell em a bit about it?

There was a Fisher's iron monger at 2 Exchange st in 1951 with a branch at Firth Park could this be the same . Waingate is adjoining Exchange st. I think Mr Fisher lived at High Greave Ecclesfield.

I don't remember Fisher's but I do remember the shop on Margetson Cres;

Let me list them in the order I remember,Which could be wrong.

As you stood facing the shops from right to left.

The fish and chip shop. ironmongers,Kadish the grocer,chemist ,nice old man ,I do not remember his name,Shaws the newsagent , Hulley's the butcher,and a fish monger,who later expanded into friut and veg.

Later was added the co-op.

Anyone care to tell me how well I remember?

Before the shops where built we used to get a green grocer come round with a van ,custom built for the job .I think his name was Tom,his family had a shop on Leppings Lane.

On the subject of the Hardware [ironmongers in those days]

We used to buy light bolbs one at a time with no packaging,Saxon's dad would test each bulb before you left the shop

You're right about most of the shops but you might be a bit older than me so remember ones before I do (I was born in '59 and lived at no. 45 from then until my dad retired in 1970) so the shops I remember are:

 

Sheldons Chip Shop

Baileys sweet shop/greengrocers, then became Leech's

Smith's Hardware (my dad)

Fine Fare grocers

Lomas' chemist

Shaws Newsagents, then became Corbridges

Hulleys butchers (I'm still in touch with David Hulley)

Deakins Greengrocers

then I think there was a dry-cleaners (not sure)

then the Co-op

and finally the library on the end
