kurlymunky
I'm looking at a PC for someone and one of the partitions on the hard drive is marked as dirty. Because of this it keeps running Checkdisk over it but doesn't find any problems. After it's finished checking it's not clearing the dirty mark so it checks on every boot up. Does anyone know how to clear the dirty mark manually? I've found out how to put the mark on but not how to take it off. Thanks, Chris.
Guest
Are you using the switch to tell it to repair errors etc? This should hopefully force a clear?

Yes, got the repair switch but still no luck. It's driving me mad now.
fnkysknky
Are you sure the dirty bit is not being cleared and then set again everytime the PC is shut down? You can check the flag by using (if you didn't know already) fsutil dirty query c: (or other drive letter) I think only chkdsk /f can clear the flag..... fnkysknky
You may be best disabling chkdsk from running on boot on that partition chkntfs /x c: (will exclude c: from chkdsk on boot) chkntfs /d (restores default behaviour i.e. chkdsk any drive with dirty bit set)
kurlymunky
Thanks for the suggestions, I've managed to sort it now. Had to exclude d: from chkdsk, then run chkdsk /f /r which took about two and a half hour to run, then restore defaults with chkntfs /d to restore. Took me half the day to sort that crap out. Thanks again.
