What type of lead is best for agility training

HI,

Please can you help. To walk our dogs we use extendable leads.

We were told these are unsuitable for training (which they are). We tried our rope type lead and when the dogs pull it nearly cuts your hands!

We borrowed our trainers 2 leads last week, they were slip leads, but not made of rope, Im not sure what they were made of but they were flat and very very soft. Problem is I cant find one anywhere.

Anyone any ideas if this is the best lead to use or where I can get some from?

Thanks : )

I always use one of those soft material flat leads. They are about five feet long but can be shortened when required. They are very strong and I'm not ib the least worried that it could break not that Max is in to pulling unless a firework goes off.

I believe they are called ttraining leads and I got mine from the petshop at Woodseats.

I'd never have an extending lead they can break, they are a trip hazard and at full length the dog has much to much freedom.

For agility, I bought a soft flat material lead with a matching collar from Jollyes, it's got a fully adjustable collar as apparently she can slip her's because the buckle holes aren't right and the lead is nice and soft too...

I'll show you mine on Sunday.

Can I also add, that I hate seeing people walk their dogs on extendables  It makes me shudder as I know they're not easy to control and have a feeling the clip that keeps them short is not all that strong... I've heard horror stories of dogs running into oncoming traffic while on lead and all sorts.

Don't get me wrong, Eddy has one for in the park, but I try not to use it on the roads unless I already have too much to carry.

They also tend to teach a dog it's ok to pull because when they pull, the lead extends, they don't know that they can't pull on other leads.

Sorry - just had to get that in, but you can ignore me if you like :D

When I had to walk through Hillsbro park to work, I noticed quite a few dog owners who had these extendable leads, let their dogs go as far as they could get, to do their business. Needless to say, the owners had no idea where to clean up, just 'retracted' the dog and kept walking. Is this the purpose of said lead? I have nicknamed them the s**t anywhere leads!

we have an extender lead for my eldest dog purely because she's blind. when retracted she walks close to heel and feels safe , when out "walking " in the woods or on the beach she has more freedom whilst knowing we still have hold of her. she does find it very reassuring - it doesn't stop her walking into lamp posts though.

I agree that extending leads can be good, but not for the roads imo.

jayne - Offlead dogs poop further away ;)

One of my dogs won't poo while on a short lead, it's incredibly irritating and I admit at times I've lost it, but usually those who don't pick up after their dogs would be the same whether the dog was on a short lead, long lead or no lead.

Your quite right Lotti never thought of that, but it is so annoying, when you know they don't clean up. Daisy is exactly the same up at the shop when I take her for a pooh on a lead...takes ages although I know she wants one, but at home, in our yard, straight away. (What a nice subject by the way, think I'm a bit off topic)
