Secateurs - what make and which type?

I've finally decided that I want a decent set of secateurs - so I've been looking around and of course found those swiss Felco types and I'm umming and ahhhing over whether to splash out...

So my questions are:

1. Are they worth it?

2. Which one to get for general hardy use?

3. Suggestions for places to get them at a better price than my usual garden centre.

4. If they are not worth it - suggest me another make / type and why!

Ta :)

Ive had a pair of cheapo ones from Wilkinsons for years, they only cost me a couple of quid and work fine so long as you are aware they are secateurs and anything wider than, say your little finger, needs a pruning saw. If you lend them to anyone stipulate carefully the maximum diameter they should cut with them because my last pair were ruined by a careless borrower. Also I darent pay a lot for a pair because I would be bound to lose them. Some people prefer bypass to anvil type. As you prob know by pass have two blades like scissors and will slice through soft stems to give a fairly clean cut with no ragged edges. They are less efficient on hard woody branches and theres a temptation to twist them which puts the blades out of alignment - this is where anvil action ones are better. They are more robust, the cutting blade goes against a flat surface. It should say the max thickness of stem on packaging if you buy decent ones. Good quality ones will perhaps make a better cut if you have some prized shrubs you dont want to damage.

So all in all I would say it depends what youre cutting and how careful you are.

Do an online search to see if you can get them cheaper!

I suppose its the sort of thing you dont buy yourself, but if someone was to treat you for Christmas you'd be made up!

Funnily enough, since I wrote the above I received a couple of shrubs I bought online and they needed a bit of a trim. So I got the aforementioned secateurs out and thought, ooh could do with some better ones!!!

Perhaps if someone on here has some mid priced ones i.e. somewhere between your £35 and my £5 they would like to give us an opinion. Perhaps its better to pay a bit more but theres a price at which its not worth going any higher (if that makes sense!).

Ahhh :) happens to us all - well I have seen some quite nice looking ones in B&Q - I think they might even be their own make for about £12 which looked quite nice....

I have some that were a present for my birthday, from my husband. They cost £45 and I know this because if I leave them in the garden and he finds them he says " you should be looking after these, they cost £45, they are not something you can mistreat and they will rust...blah blah blah....rant, blah...."

I have to admit, they are excellent and even without the TLC they still cut through everything with ease.
