_Kirsty_
Hiya, My dad is doing his at the minute and has found some interesting stuff. Hes gone back to 1675! Has anybody looked into your family tree? If you have, have you found out anything really interesting/famous ancestors? Kirsty x
peterw
Your dad’s gone quite a long way back so give him my congratulations. I’ve only gone back to 1745, but it’s been well worth the effort. I now know that I’m of Scottish descent — from the Dernie family — and I’m entitled to wear the ‘clan’ plaid (which has been absorbed by another clan), and that my 1745 ancestor followed Bonnie Prince Charlie while he was advancing but wisely deserted during the retreat and settled in Retford. If he hadn’t, I’d have been a Scot and maybe ended up as a politician or a union official!

Kirsty x Just looked him up — and what a surprise! Retford! My great-great grandfather was a fish, game and poultry merchant (deliveries to the gentry no less!) in Carrolgate and one of the town’s leading Baptists so it’s likely that Shadrach the journalist gave him at least some publicity in the local newspaper! What a small world we live in.
Bago
I think it's really nice that people keep such things. At least the next generation can feel proud of their roots and it gives them a sense of belonging ! I kind of started looking into my own family tree too. Just some things that my father said, and my mom mentions in conversations in passing. I think we're several generation of settlers in HK. Previously before that, it's in an area in Canton Province. Unsure how we are historically. My surname is certainly not as famous as the surname 'Tang'. Which has ancestral roots in some areas of Yuen Long of HK, and apparently, some Emperor gave the family their own land for some reasons. Their next generation boosts about this and kind of prosperied all across the world ! It's written in a lot of books. I don't think my family is that famous. My mom said several generation back, we're pirates ! I think she's been watching too many Jackie Chan movies. Like Project A.
peterw
This is a daft bit but when I first wrote to a weaving company about which plaid I was entitled to wear (I tend to have it made up in shirts, just to be different), they proudly informed me that one of their better-known customers was Bruce Forsyth! shoeshine
Missus shoeshine and I are looking into our origins at present. It is very time consuming. My wife is a direct descendant, through the female line, of one of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. And that really is a fact she has been able to prove from the historical records. although her family have always known it.
