Tips for backache welcomed!

Recommended Posts

Got up this morning, felt a slight twinge in the base of my spine and have been having chronic backache all day. Can walk (just) but seems to be ok when lying down flat or stood up. Just aches when sat down. Might just be a pulled muscle or something as I don't usually suffer from back pain. Apart from taking paracetamol anyone have any other tips?

You also could do with doing some basic stretches to stop yourself from seizing up.

Try lying on your back with the soles of your feet on the bed/floor and bring your knees to your chest, first one at a time and then both together, squeezing them to your chest with your arms. Repeat up to 10 times.

Then put your feet back flat on the floor and allow your knees to rest very gently to one side then the other a few times.

You can do these half a dozen times a day, and inbetween times try to keep moving too.

Alternating hot and cold packs on the sore bit (5 minutes per pack, up to half an hour, starting and finishing with cold) can also be helpful.

Doing as ruby suggested with painkillers will also help (bear in mind that you can have cocodamol, which is paracetamol and codeine, and ibuprofen or another NSAID in your system at the same time perfectly safely, but please remember to eat when you take the ibuprofen to protect your stomach).

Can you tell I'm a chronic back pain sufferer?

Feel free to PM if you want any more tips.

A stretching exercise that always seems to help me when my back plays up (stable for 2 years+ now thankfully)...

Sit cross legged with legs LOOSELY crossed (not tucked right in), put your palms on the floor in front of you & slowly stretch your hands forward one at a time, so it slowly bends you forward. Don't put any real pressure on your back, & don't go far enough to cause any further discomfort. This seemed to help me most, & is quite low-impact. You can also put cushions on your lap if it's comfortable stretching all the way so you're almost flat, so you can have a rest once stretched out.

theres a pilates stretching exercise that i was told about that helped me once - stand up straight and then tuck in your chin and begin to toll your neck down continuing so that your back begins to bend over but attempting to keep your lower back straight for as long as you can so you're bending one vertebrae at a time and you can feel them stretching individually. carry on until you can place your hands on the floor (or as far as you can go) .then begin to roll back up again straightening the base of your spine first and then working your way up. if you do that a few times its a really gentle way to stretch out any sore muscles. :)
