If you're interested in learning a little about TESOL as a taster, without the cost implication, how about contacting the SAVTE Home Learning Project and becoming a voluntary TESOL teacher for them on a one to one basis for an hour or two a week?

They train you to OCN Level 3 at their own expense, and support you while you're finding your feet with your learner. It's a way to dip your toe in the water- how about it?

i can probably give a few hours as a volunteer, i know it's valuable and i would enjoy it, have done much voluntary stuff i other countries over the years. I am looking to move out of working in schools as i am being, i feel, exploited, 'cheap teachers' are what teaching assistants have become, and we are so badly paid for the qualifications, experience and skills we have. Anyway rant over, have you done TESOL, can i eventually earn a living teaching English etc.

Hi there

i did the tesol course at Sheffield hallam this year and i have to say it was the best course i've ever done. It was really worth the money and it even got me some teaching work at Sheffield college over the summer.

I can't reccommend the course enought the staff and facilities were incredible, the course really fills you with confidence and it's very rewarding, for me at least to teach my language to others.

I did the course via the part time route which starts in January, it was the best way because i could work while i studied.

If you want to see the world this course is brilliant, most of the people off my course are off around the globe now teaching, and judging by the emails i'm getting they are loving it.

If you have any questions i'd try and get in contact with Sue tulston at the tesol centre, i think they've moved to the center of town now, she's a lovely woman and can give you all the information you could need about the course and teaching. She started off doing the course at first and worked her way up, so anything is possible.

Hope this helps good luck messeage me if you need anymore help

I've done some informal work with chinese people teaching some basics in English.

Would be interested to know more about this.

I'll give them a ring next week. Sounds like a 2 way learning opportunity.

macgarry, it's really great to hear someone being so positive about a course, i think most of my globetrotting days are over , i spent 13-15 years travelling working on aid projects etc, i was really wondering if i could earn a livinghere in sheffield teaching english. Sounds like i probably can.

Not sure if i could do the voluntary thing, as i do have to work full time, including the extra school events that come up and i'm also doing the nvq assessors course, as well as the usual three kids, three dogs, cats, rabbits and husband.
