Ranger
Hello all, Any Laurel and Hardy fans out there? If so, you may be interested to know that Sheffield has its own tent of the Sons of the Desert (Laurel & Hardy Appreciation Society). We meet on the second Monday of each month at the New Crown on Handsworth Road, about 7.30pm. Nothing formal, a bit of escapism really. Watch some Laurel and Hardy films, drink beer and have a raffle. All welcome, even kids.

pattricia
Same here. They were great. Nothing like them since.Shows you dont have to spend a lot on props etc; as long as you have a good script.
Guest Ant
I adore Laurel and Hardy. I've just bought the 22 dvd boxed set and watched every one. Ah, bliss ! My girlfriend's son has just watched them all as well. He's an eight-year old convert. The legend lives on in another generation.
LordChaverly
I'm a big L&H fan too. I read a very good biography of them a while ago and was quite surprised to discover what a big ladies man Stan was. Apparently he went over to the US on the same boat as Chaplin (who I have never found funny) at a time when he was barely known but when Chaplin was already quite famous. Apparently, Chaplin treated him with contempt. One thing i have noticed is that most L&H fans are men. I don't think women find them quite so funny - perhaps its something to do with the male bonding between Stan and Ollie.
Jabberwocky
Ive sat with my other half through most of the stan and ollie movies, even the early silent ones and she simply cant find them amusing. You definately have a point there.

Fareast
Fantastic ! Wish I was in Sheffield to join in. I believe Timo is also a fan as we discussed Laurel and Hardy ages ago, on the Entertainment thread, I think. A mate of mine in Cumbria has collected nearly every single one of their films. He's a teacher and at one point used to have a weekly lunch-time L.& H. film show for the kids and it was very popular. Believe it or not, I saw them at the Empire on Charles Street, around 1950, at the age of 8. [My Dad was a fan, too].I got their autographs but later lost them. They were doing a farewell tour of Europe, I think. The story is that when they sailed into Dublin harbour, a band on the quayside, struck up with their theme music, the Cuckoo one[?]. I was a bit disappointed, as a kid, at the Empire. Being a kid, I expected them to be doing something like they did in their films. However, they were getting on a bit by then and their act was about two tramps trying to settle down to sleep on a park bench and getting entwined. A great comedy duo; the best in the world at what they did, in my opinion. So, good luck to the Sheffield group and don't drink too much beer and " getton yourselves into another fine mess." !
