nokia3250
doncaster is a lot further infront of of sheffield and has a big shopping centre above the new interchange so is ideal and also has the top brand shops that meadowhall as, sheffield is ok, but this wills eriously make rotherham dispaer off the map, it is justa commuter town between donny and sheffield soon may even become a part of sheffield and donny and just disaper. nokia3250
yes have to agree is sheffield worked with all 3 south yorkshire councils we could end up like birmingham be a major big city and be put on the mpa, have 1 council and 1 mayour and the greater sheffield region will be a lot betetr than manchester. Longcol
We used to go to a great pub called the Miner's Arms in town too. Is that still there? Sold real ale, which was a rarity in 1977. Are you sure it wasn't the Masons Arms on the Market Place - sold one of the best pints of Tetleys in South Yorkshire.

FriarTuck
Donc in front of Sheffield for what may i ask? You are having a laugh aren't you! Good lord. For town/city centre shopping Doncaster can certainly give Sheffield a run for its money. Like I have said previously, I was there last week and very surprised by the quality and quantity of shops, particularly in the Frenchgate centre. Sheffield has Supertram, but we are still behind Doncaster in transport network, you only have to look at a rail network map, or road map to see this. Then of course there's the new airport at Doncaster that is growing. I think also in the past couple of years its been pretty much equal dibs in attracting major business. As for culture, education, attractiveness, and commerce, Doncaster really needs to go some to catch up.
Yog Sothoth
Are you sure it wasn't the Masons Arms on the Market Place - sold one of the best pints of Tetleys in South Yorkshire. MASON'S arms! Doh! Yep, it was. Cheers. I don't think South Yorks should try to compete with leeds, Huddersfield/West Yorks. South Yorks needs to find a different path. I'm from the Leeds/Bradford area and love it up there but I live in Sheff now and would hate to see it become the new Leeds. Personally I think Leeds has lost a lot of its soul and become a commercial sellout, a city of shopping and bars, losing a lot of its own identity along the way. I fear Sheffield will go the same way, and Donny too. Leeds will stay a big commercial centre, but its neighbour Bradford, after decades of abuse and ruin, will become the cultural capital of that area I think. Sheffield is somewhere between the two right now. It has the artistic and multicultural aspects of Bradford, with the vitality of Leeds. It needs sensitive development in the city centre to maintain this balance, and not to suck commercial life from the unique satellite suburbs like Broomhill, Woodseats, Hunters bar etc. Leeds made that mistake by allowing too many out of town hypermarkets and the like, and thriving satellite towns like Pudsey, Cross Gates and Headingley suffered enormously. I see Sheffield and otjher South Yorkshire towns perched on the edge of a springboard, about to become boomtowns. i only hope they get it right. I'd hate to see these great cities become like Birmingham or Leeds or Manchester, which are largely indistinguishable, as far as their modern developments go. Lets see some bold architecture. Let's see the vision that Newcastle have shown, not the conservatism of Leeds or Brum.
Mathom
I can't believe people like the Frenchgate Centre. It's vile! The only way out of the interchange is through that hellhole, and b*gger me if there's only one exit and its almost impossible to find. Mysteriously the signs funnel you the long way round so you have to pass by even more cruddy chainstore shops. When I was there only one lift was working and two escalators were out of order - the crowds on the stairwells were getting dangerous. No greenery, no seats, and signs that weren't designed by someone who knows how signs work. Blinding white marble (or concrete) so you get a headache just walking around. And the monstrosity blocks off the church/minster. which is one of the most beautiful buildings in Yorkshire and anywhere else would be surrounded by cafes, bars and posh flats. The market is top stuff though.

Took the in-laws and everyone had a great day out. Not sure what you mean about the exits in Frenchgate. I took note and there's several exits. I enjoy Meadowhall but I think a shopping centre in the centre of a city (town whatever the case may be) adds that bit more too it. I have to agree about the seats but that is part of the second phase. My one critic was that Doncaster was heaving to the point of claustraphobia, the Frenchgate Centre, Market, the side streets etc were all extremely busy and there's no place to escape to. It desperately needs a chill out place in the town centre. I am bigging Doncaster centre up because I love it and think it's great how its turned itself around. I'll always be Sheffield first, but it is nice having somewhere not too far away like Doncaster as a good alternative.
Ms Macbeth
Leeds is crap.. I just love an objective opinion Ah, Doncaster.... In the late 70's I used to do some volunteer work with the BTCV who were based on Copley Road. Further along the road, there was a butcher's who used to do roast beef sarnies, The beef was cut from a joint of topside, using a knife - great thick slabs of well-done beef with crisp edges, stuffed into a buttered (no marg!) flatcake the size of a teaplate. They were about 45p and I once bought two, but couldn't eat them both, they were that big. It'll be a corner shop run by Pakistanis now. We used to go to a great pub called the Miner's Arms in town too. Is that still there? Sold real ale, which was a rarity in 1977. I worked at the Gas Offices on Wheatley Hall Road in the late 70s and I'm sure we got our sarnies from the same shop - I never even thought of buying more than one! If we were flush at work we'd go to the Cheshire Cheese, or the Red Lion in the market place. I lived in Doncaster from 1970 to the early 90s, and I have to agree its probably got the best market in South Yorks - specially for fish, and veg. I felt there was an unhealthy political scene in Doncaster for years, very similar in that respect to Rotherham, and that stopped the town from progressing. It appears on the up now, but Sheffield is a very different place, the universities attract a lot of people who stay and work after graduation, and there is nowhere in Doncaster that remotely resembles Ecclesall Road, or Division Street shopping areas. I lived in Hexthorpe in the early 70s - poor area in those days, but fantastic people, pretty multicultural due to the railway workers living in the area. Bought our first house in Armthorpe but didn't stay long, the mining village scene just wasn't for us, I don't think we were 'local' enough We moved to Bessacarr in 1975 and stayed for 17 years.
