crookeschap
The cathedral is near the centre - the 'cathedral' that you want to see is the Sagrada Familla - further out of town but well worth a visit. It is still in progress (started in 1890 or summat) - so fascinating to see. Nou Camp tour worthwhile - also the Olympic Stadium and general olympic area up on Montjuic - best to get to this by cable car from the beach (good view on the cable car). Las ramblas - needs to be done i suppose - very touristy. At the bottom - the piers are good and there is a good museum of catalonian history. Best to eat of the beaten track - near Jaume I subway station is the place to be - I forget the names of the streets but a whole series of pedestrian streets - great food (like tapas - but not trad spanish tapas) and good drink too. Lastly - remember you are in Catalonia and not Spain - there are differences in the language and the difference in how the locals will treat you if say Si Es Plau instead of Por Favor for please is amazing. rjgallac
I'd recommend Parc Guell, La Pedrera and Casa Batllo for some more of Gaudis' best work. The later two are just off Las Ramblas and cost about £5 to get in. The Parc is free but quite a trek. As already mentioned you can't go without a visit to la Sagrada. I also went about this time and caught a fantastic festival over there. At the town hall they celebrate the end of tourist season and march all sorts of dragons and beasts out of the town hall covered in fireworks. Whatever they do, don't drive. sarah1
TBH, I didn't like Barcelona that much.. It was scruffy, litter all over the place and the smell.. WOW.. You could do with some vicks vapour rub to put under your nose to block it out..And what made it worse, it rained and the smell from the drains made you gag even more.. I did quite like the Cathedral though, it's a nice place to visit.. Tell them to take the lift to the roof to see the views.. The smells not so bad up there neither I hope they like it more than we did..
tinsel_ninja
I loved Barcelona. It has an energy and a vibrancy to the place that's really exciting. Parc Guell is definitely worth a visit - it's a large park with bits of Gaudi's architecture and artwork everywhere. A great place to wander round as a sightseer, or to go and relax for an afternoon. Another good thing to do is go to the fountains at night where they light them up, and put on a display to music. Also, look out for the giant lobsster on the building along the shore! The Olympic village is impressive, but I'm not sure it's worth the trek.

I've been several times and never ever noticed a smell. there is just so much to do and see you can't fail to enjoy it. Have a great time. (Get a bus or taxi to Parc Guell cos its all uphill from town)

Agree with this, the cathedral is awesome. Please look after your belongings though, have purses, wallets, burried under layers out of sight. It's a haven for pickpockets.
