Vulcan B2
Hi, I have searched the forum and was unable to find the answers, so I would be grateful for any help and advice. My son has got a lovely royal python. We think he's about 6 months old, and he is a lovely, gentle curious snake. He was given the name Steve-o in tribute to Steve Irwin (corny I know) We bought a Micro climate B1 thermostat to control the infra red lamp in the vivarium, and after about a week, it seemed not to be working properly. We returned it to the shop - The Mill garden centre in Chesterfield. The guy there said that Micro climate thermostats were covered by a manufacturers own guarantee, and that we should return it by post to the manufacturer. He said that we should receive a replacement back very quickly. Unfortunately, 5 days have gone and still no replacement. I rang Micro climate and they told me that they could find no fault and were returning the stat. We're not very happy with the service we have received, and my hubby thinks that a thermostat with day and night settings would be best. We have looked at the Micro climate B1 Magic Eye, but not too keen on dealing with this company again. I've also seen the Habistat range, but not sure which is the best for our needs. The viv is 3x2x2 with no heat mat, and an infra red light bulb. Thanks

bluesandtwos
go with habistat dimmer stats. thats what we use on our royals (and other herps too). as for the microclimate one you have, take it back to the shop and demand your money back: Your contract is with the point of purchase and if they try to tell you otherwise, they are fobbing you off. Its their job to send it to the manufacturer

Its their job to send it to the manufacturer Thanks for your advice. Can you tell me if the Habistat dimmer stats are suitable for providing the lower night temp that the royals require? Does it have a dial that you set manually? We were advised not to use a heat mat with the royals because they are prone to burns? It's a bit confusing trying to balance between the day time temp and night time temp. Thanks

Thanks Yes you can turn the temp down bye a dial on the front on the Habistat and the ones i am selling ... i have one here you can have for £35 Heat mats are fine as long as you use a mat stat with them as the larger mats get too hot and i wouldn't trust one without a stat

You're right about the shop - they do have an obligation to sort out the prob, I shall be returning! Thanks:)

bluesandtwos
I dont do night time temp changes, there not essential and serious royal breeders dont bother. the only time you need to change temp is if you wanted to breed, then you would have to simulate a winter hibernation period, though TBH, the problem then is keeping the temp LOW enough, as most houses now dont have temps as low as the 12-14 c required. heatmats can cause burns on royals as they are particularly lazy and will sit on them till they fry, but can be used with an on-off stat rather than a dimmer.
