A collection of snacks and a real treat to try.

Try and enjoy. Many places have no English menu as not that many english people know about it.

Just go with a chinese friend. If you have no chinese friends - find at least one and take them out for dim sum.:)

It's a social thing as well as a meal.

Its always a good sign when Chinese people eat at their own restuarants.I will definitely try this place.

Go at lunch time and try the dim sum.

The staff are very helpful and will suggest dishes to try.

Best with 2-4 people.

Always take it with chinese tea.

Many veggie dishes on the menu?

My friend had a bad experience trying to get veggie food there.

His vegetable soup had fish and prawns in it and no amount of explaining did any good.

I'm not knocking the resaurant at all. I know that vegetarianism can seem a very strange thing to some cultures.

I think that was definitely a mistake. Especially if their menus show some vegetarian dishes.

Maybe this is because there are not many traditional 'Cantonese' vegetarian dishes. Cantonese-based food is what makes up of majority of chinese food in the UK. If you asked a chinese restaurant whether they do "Buddhist vegetarian food", they will say no. But then they will understand where you are coming from, and may be able to recommend or work with you in choosing something more acceptable. A lot of people understand this concept more than they do with British 'vegetarian/vegan' standards.

Maybe it's because vegetarian and veganism is so confusing to the typical chinese restauranteur that they would think that omitting meat makes it a vegetarian dish. (Some do think like this. Not all though.) Many just use vegetables in their vegetarian dishes, to be on the safe side. Not many will use the proper 'V' stamp for vegetarian endorsed by the Vegetarian Society.

Spicey, yes there are vegetarian dishes, but it depends on how strict you are about it. i.e. can you accept utensils which might have touched meat, or...?

To answer your question directly, no, there may not be many items on a dim sum menu which will state as strictly vegetarians. (There may be more vegetarian main dishes than there are dim sums.) If I go with a friend who is vegetarian, I ask the eating establishment to make adaption of their existing menu choices. Well, this is how I approach it with Dim Sum. However, I know in London, more chinese dim sum restaurants are more in tune with vegetarian eaters and they will make it more obvious on their menus.

If anybody wants a list of vegetarian dim sum recommendation, you can ask me. I think I wrote a few before for someone else on the SF. I normally just choose basic things, but it's always best to go with a friend who knows how they cook their dim sums, and ask to omit certain food items. (Some places will be more accomodating than others. It depends on the owner.) Some dim sums are prepared fresh, but some are prepared before and quick frozen to use the day before. So it's easier to get the ones that they make from fresh. i.e. basic rice roll with no meat or anything added.

Thanks Bago! I am veggie for religious reasons and so utensils that have touched meat doesn't sound too great. I really want to try some dim sum though!

I tend to avoid chinese food mainly because I find the veggie food isn't all that, just some vegetables with hardly any taste. I only recently started eating it after discovering a Budhist chinese resturant in London which is amazing. I was trying to convince the woman to open up a branch in Sheffield but she just laughed at me :(
