What to do about Fighting Cats!

Recommended Posts

So I'm presuming you have two male cats? I had this problem a long time ago, once both cats were neutered they seemed to calm down but they were never the best of buddies!

I think if you put two males together it usually happens (please correct me as I'm not really an expert).

We have two females and there aren't any problems except for the occasional scrap!

Natural behaviour for toms.

Have they been neutered?

If not, you should consider it.

Anyone know what to do about my cats fighting?

We've had a cat for 3 months (he's now 6 months old), he's a really nice, friendly kitty. We thought we'd get him a playmate so we got another male the same age. The new cat will not leave the other one alone. He constantly is antaganising him and attacking him. We don't want our poor kitty to be upset so we are considering taking the new one back to the RSPCA if we can't get him to be nice!

Any advice?

Have they had their 'bits' taken off?

They are probably deciding who is top cat.. somebody has to be. If your other cat continues to be subservient it should die down, one would hope.

That said my neighbour has a cat which is pure evil. It lurks in bushes and attacks anything that walks by, dogs, cats, even people. So maybe hes just nasty tempered.

How long have you had the second cat? How old is it? How did you introduce them to one another?

I wonder whether you're mistaking playing for fighting here- two 6 month old kittens would normally look like they're half killing each other when actually they're playing. They're both entering the 'demonic' stage when people with one kitten begin to question whether they've got a monster. It's normal and nothing to worry about.

Normal cat conversation includes hissing and growling as part of a game, and unless you find chunks of skin and/or detached ears on the carpet when you get up in the morning I'd treat this as totally normal for two growing toms.

Cats are by nature worryingly rough when playing with each other- older kittens even more so. Unless you have proof that this is upsetting your original kitty (breaking of toilet training, refusing food etc) then I think you're possibly being a bit oversensitive at this point.

EDIT- and if you only got the second one recently then you aren't seeing them together properly at all- they need at least 2 weeks, preferably a month, before you can judge these things.

A well aimed blast from a plant mister is the training method in our house .... Even when the cat thinks that it'll see if clawing the sofa has become acceptable practice I just get the mister and sit there with it.

The cat suddenly gives me a look of "Sofa? Claws? The thought never even entered my head Dad!" :D

Only on Friday??! I'm not suprised there is a bit of fur flying

Introductions need to be made gently and slowly to try and avoid power/stranger scraps! It can take a couple of weeks for a new cat to settle, and for any resident cats to feel comfortable about having a stranger shoved in their home. Its only been about three days!
