riptony
Riptony: Are you a shopper ? It's true though. I mean products by Siemens are better designed, and more ergonomic than a Tesco value kettle for example. In a supply/demand market where the same product is manufactured everywhere, you need to increase the quality (or functionality) of the product in order to sell it. Why would someone pay a large amount for a Siemens-Porsche kettle, than just a normal non-branded one ? It's like Denby potteries, why would you pay more for a Denby (which is more sturdy, and hand-made), than a mass-produced porcelain dish from China which was made by machines ? Maybe you think it's partly marketing, but you know that some products which uses a higher quality material which pushes the price of the object up indeed means a better quality product surely ? agree with all this, but this doesn't explain why you think products manufactured in china are of a lower quality

poppins
My son has to go to China quite often to over-look merchandise being made for his company, he says if they don't keep on top of things nothing is done right, they just dont "get it". He also had to make sure every things up to code in their factories over there, like fire alarms, smoke detectors ect, the Chineese will put up fake smoke detectors made out of paper mache among other things they try to get away with. Bago
agree with all this, but this doesn't explain why you think products manufactured in china are of a lower quality I've come across some products made from this country, because they are a country who is trying hard to build up its economy, so therefore they are not trying to make higher quality goods at this moment in time. When they make the money, then they may invest in bringing standards up to scratch, by investing in better machinaries or manufacturing methods. As mentioned previously about countries like Germany and Japan in the past. I'm sure its an industrial stage that the country has to go through, but so far, a lot of factories are being built, and they are not making things for the higher end of the consumer market yet. It is not putting the country down to say that a lot of fake things are coming through from the country itself. As things are being standardised, and quality control is tightened. A lot more goods would be accepted abroad.

A lot more goods would be accepted abroad. Do you have any evidence of this from a reliable source? I spend a lot of time reading the financial pages and the electrical goods coming from China are of just as high quality as those produced in the west or Japan. the reason why goods, specifically labour intensive goods are so cheap is because the shear supply of labour naturally implies labour is incredably cheap and as a direct result goods can be produced at a fraction of the cost with no loss of quality. Over the last couple of years American and Japanese electrical manufacturers have shifted a lot of manufacturing to China, some have built their own factories and managed them themselves and some have used local manufacturers. A lot of marketing spin is placed on products produced in developed countries and lines such as 'non of our item are produced in china' is quite easy on the ears! Most TV's and fridges a produced in China, JCB are renowned for high quality, only final assembly is completed in the UK, the components are nailed together in China. My opinion is that the reason why the UK economy is currently and will remain bullish for some time to come is that we have relatively small amounts of manufacturing, we simply can't compete with cheaper labour markets. look at Ford and GM in the US, why do we think they're suffering so badly? poppins
I think Ford and GM are suffering because every one bought new cars when they all offered zero financing a couple of years ago, we bought two brand new ones ourselves because of the zero financing. Try getting parts for a foreign car, three times the price.
