Cellador
Hello! My brother coming to visit me for the weekend 24th - 26 Nov and bringing my two adorable nieces with him. They're aged 2 and 4 (nearly 5). My knowledge of things to do or places to visit with children in Sheffield is precisely zero! So - any suggestions? What parks are fab for little kids? I live in Crookes but have a car so distance is no problem. Is there anything great for adults and little tots in the Peaks? (I did do a search by the way but only found stuff about parent & todler groups, which aren't really suitable.) Any suggestions greatly recieved!!! Cheers
kittenta
How about taking them to rivelin? Nice walks, playground, cafe, my kids love it and it really tires them out! edit - Millhouses park is good too.

alchresearch
Someone mentioned the Xmas lights in Castleton not so long ago, not sure when they're on though.
Thorpist
You could try swimming at Barnsley Metrodome, it is ideal if the weather is poor.
Danielblythe
Lots of parks with play equipment. Nearest to you is probably the one at the Bolehills, but Rivelin (already mentioned) has a decent cafe and nature trail. Spider Park at Lodge Moor has a good range of equipment - but it gets cold up there. Take extra layers! Then take them for a bracing walk up on Stanage Edge! (Maybe the 2-year-old will need carrying on dad's shoulders.) Child-friendly pubs include the Moorlands (with indoor play area), the Crosspool Tavern, and the Admiral Rodney at Loxley. And Millhouses, Endcliffe and Hillsborough parks are also a good bet, all with lots of space to run around in and nearby cafes, etc. If you're venturing further afield, try the Swimming Pool Cafe at Hathersage, with great wooden playground behind it. The Weston Park Museum is open now - and free! That's just down the road from you. It may not mean much to the 2-year-old, but the 4-year-old should get something out of it. Loxley School is having its Christmas Fair that Saturday - bring them along to meet Father Christmas! If it's raining you could unleash them in one of the indoor play areas like Tots2Tens or Space Funzone at Hillsborough, or the Pirate Ship on Baxter Rd, S5. The little one may only be able to go in the soft-play areas.
cgksheff
Someone mentioned the Xmas lights in Castleton not so long ago, not sure when they're on though. In 2006 the Castleton Christmas lights will be switched on at 4:30pm on Saturday 18th November with the last day of Castleton's Christmas Lights being Friday 5th January 2007. http://www.derbyshireguide.co.uk/travel/castleton.htm

Cellador
Thanks everyone ! Is the Moorland's pub worth a visit? What's the grub like? And call me daft but is the swimming pool cafe in Hathersage actually a swimming pool?!
Bago
The Moorland Pub's food is okay. I think it's one of the chains, but it is decent. A Christmas market sounds great. If there is a Santa's Grotto for the kids, Christmas shopping for the ladies, and then possibly a pub walk or some walking gear shopping for the guys. I was going to suggest Magna, but it's more for kids than it is for adults. I think you can spend about half a day in there. A few friends have gone as far as Beamish Muesuem. It's near Newcastle, and it's about a couple of hour's drive away. I guess it's a little bit far. Chatsworth House is worth visiting. It's one of the bigger estate around the Yorkshire area.
