Savannah2
So, does anyone on the forum not use AV? On my maim PC I don't use a software firewall or any Spyware programs and I am 100% satisfied that I have never had any spy/mal or any other ware on my PC. I do an on-line scan once a month and get the all clear, so after Reading this artical I'm thinking of uninstalling my AV, and run the PC without AV. Space
Up to you. If you buy things online or give out personal details online, I certainly wouldn't recommend being without Antivirus or Antispyware installed.
max
Read a little bit further: Not the whole story and you'll discover that he has Gateway AV installed on his network. Not really AV free after all.

Ann*
It's pointed out in the link Max posted that there were earlier articles.....which is what I'd thought, because the article in the link you left, Sav, is very similar to something I read a year or so ago. Either this George Ou has plagiarized most of that article, or it is just a rewrite of something he prepared earlier. Sorry, but it doesn't ring true to me. Dardandec
A few people I know who have run windows in the past without av have had seriously infected pc's so personally I wouldn't advise it. I'm also a Norton fan but everyone to their own eh . . . . . . . . . Quick wheres the logout link
max
Isn't a pc running sans av called a honeypot?
blip
It's an interesting one this. I seem to have managed without AV, and never had any problems. My problems have always come, so to speak, via clicking those irresistible links on dodgy sites. But that seems to have been sorted now that I have half a dozen firewalls and the analysis programs which seem to be able to find and eliminate the 'nasties'. In fact, I'm a bit ignorant about the whole thing, what actually does AV do? Is it just email attachments that it deals with?
dosxuk
I don't run AV or a firewall on my desktop machine, only running an online scan from housecall every few months just to be sure. I do run AV on my laptop because it's plugged up to networks I don't have control over, and it's a term of my accessing certain networks. I do however have a hardware firewall on my router which I also check the logs of to ensure they're working properly. Having not run AV on my desktop since 2001 when I built the machine, I'm am yet to get any spyware / malware. 90% of malware is easily avoidable. The other 10% is the nasty stuff you need to take precautions against.
