Bago
I'm having the problem of trying to read a USB driver on my Win98. I've bought a plug-in which has a USB port, but it didn't come with a driver. Is there anywhere where I can download a generic driver to make it work ? Greybeard
Are you using win98 or Win98SE ? The older version isn't very good with USB. Assuming what you have is a PCI USB card it should have come with a driver CD, failing that if you know the make & model number you can probably find a driver onthe web. Edit - just thought, do you mean a USB drive eg external hard drive/pen drive ?
sccsux
Win 98 doesn't like USB2 (only up to 1.1 IIRC) USB was in development when Win 98 was released, so MS did a "bit of a bodge job". Anything from 98se can handle USB2 pretty well though.
fnkysknky
Or plug it in and see what it comes up as - might give you a clue to the USB 2.0 chipset used so you can then find drivers for it It is Win98SE you're running isn't it?
alchresearch
That's the problem with cheap generic USB flash memory - unless you know the manufacturer, you're going to struggle with support. However, buy Kingston or Belkin and you'll probably find the drivers straight away.
Bago
Well, these are the info: It's Win98. Not SE. Tried to search for drivers, but didn't know what to look for. Or rather, the Win98 disk didn't have any. Cos no compatible inf files came up. It's a USB pen drive. It's make is PNY. I've tried this on a XP machine before and it's worked. It detected it. It's where I saved the files from, and now I'm trying to get these files onto my old Win98 machine. Maybe it's easier for me to find a USB 2.0 to USB 1.1/0 adaptor or something. The M/B has (I think, I need to check again), a couple of USB 1.0 slots. The USB plug-in was a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (CHC224?) or something like that. Not a well known branded thing. It didn't come with a disk of drivers, cos I bought it at a computer fair as 2nd hand.
fnkysknky
Sorry I thought you were adding a USB 2.0 port/hub to the PC. Win98 doesn't play nice (if at all) with USB 2.0. USB is backwards compatible though - a 2.0 device will work in a 1.1/1.0 port just at a reduced speed. You're still going to have problems finding a driver though. Bago
Well, for some reasons, I'm okay in using this USB hub. Cos I already added this in. It's kind of worked cos I've plugged my digi-camera in before. Albeit, not great, but I've managed to d/l stuff before. However, plugging in this pen drive, it flags up the "USB 12x" comment, and prompt for a driver. Just wondered whether there are any generic driver which may make it work. fnkysknky
Is it on this page: http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache They only offer Win98SE drivers it seems.

If it's any of these there are drivers for Win98SE only... http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache It might be worth investing in one of these... http://kryton.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/directusbstore?productID=318&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=23 which should solve you USB problems, but note it's only USB 1.1. This one is USB 2.0 but seems to support only Win98SE. http://kryton.clickandbuild.com/cnb/shop/directusbstore?productID=317&op=catalogue-product_info-null&prodCategoryID=23 In any case I'd email them to confirm about Win98. I've used them several times and they're quite helpful. And an extension cable to bring the connection onto your desk... USB 2.0 Extension Cable - 1m (A/M - A/F) £2.99 (ex Vat £2.54) from the same place.
