What operating system are you on? I used to get this all the time on windows 98 and my dial-up to freeserve , took me months to solve it (and I cant remember how:confused: )

Also I assume you are on dial-up not broadband? Cos broadband is technically on all the time anyway.

Update anti-virus and do a scan, spyware (though a pain) is not likely to cause this IMHO

If your not on dial-up and you are using a router/etc for broadband you can go into the device management via typing the default gateway address in the address bar of your browser (i.e. typically 192.168.0.1 for NETGEAR) and look for "WAN setup" and unclick "connect automatically, as required" (or like) to disable the automatic internet connection on start-up. But this means you'll have to log into the device management page everytime you want a connection for the internet etc. This is what I do 'cause I really dislike startup entries etc.

Though I think I may have misunderstood - does the webpage show on desktop? What webpage is shown? etc.

my computer connects to the internet on start up ive run spybot etc and everything comes up clean but it keeps doing it any ideas?

Assumptions:

You have a modem connnection (whether dial-up or broadband) that shows a "Dial-Up Connection dialogue" when it connects.

Your problem is that it connects as soon as you start your computer and shows the connecting dialogue box.

Cause:

Some program on your system, very likely legitimate, is asking to access the Internet when your computer starts, possibly to try to check for updates on the Internet.

Your computer is set to automatically connect to the Internet when asked to by a program asking for access.

Solution:

In most to all cases, turn off "Connect Automatically" for your dial-up connection. Otherwise, go to Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections and select "Never Dial a Connection". You will then have to manually start the connection when you want to be connected.
