Someone, who has your email address in their address book, has a virus. Judging by the volume, it could be a Company.

This probably exactly what's happening, and there is nothing you can do from your end. You need to do a bit of detective work fast!

I had the same a few weeks ago, so I checked who had emailed me just before it started, and found somebody had used an old email address which also happened to be the one that showed on the failed delivery message. From there it was easy enough to get them to shut down that PC and run a virus check which stopped it.

However, it took them about 6 hours to sort it during which time I was getting around 3,500 returns an hour! :o

If there is nothing that stands out, contact everyone who has recently sent you an email. They are unlikely to know that there is a problem so you will be doing them a favour. In the meantime you can relieve a bit of the stress by setting up a filter so that anything received goes into a newly created folder, unless the sender is in your address book.

Thanks for your kind words folks - the deluge seems to be slowing now. About 6000 so far. Steev - I'll certainly check out the spf thing.

Are they all coming through the same address? Is it though your own domain? Have you got a "catch all" email address set?

I'm getting so much spam and returned mail on my force9 account I've had to stop using it.

The returned stuff is addressed: <random chars>@<mydom>.f9.co.uk, eg: ertdk@mydom.f9.co.uk

Very annoying. It looks like a few people have got a virus which is sending spam using my address.

K.

PS Just noticed. Firefox 2 has a spell checker that works in textareas.
