i play them not as much as i used to because i gave them up one year for my new years resolution and found i was about £110 up every week i realised i had a problem i like having a go on the quiz machines though yes i know they're just bandits too but a quid lasts longer than 30 seconds like it does in a fruit machine

I think I have a fruit machine problem. My other half keeps saying he's going to buy me one when we move to keep me quiet :D.

gamblers anonymous i don't believe in gambling myself ye if you ave one at home that's OK but it can be a sign of mental problem if you are addicted as some people are

I used to play them a lot but the novelty wore off and I was paying heavily for my habit. On the machines with a 'nudge' facility, it used to annoy me not knowing what was 'round the corner' so I played a while on a machine popular in pubs and clubs and worked out the sequence of each symbol on each reel. When I got a 'nudge' I knew what was where and could make optimum use of the number of nudges. Problem: if you dont' get a 'nudge' you cant use the info. Gave up about 15 years ago. I still have a modest flutter on the horses. Going into the bookies at 11 o'clock I see the same faces playing the same machines regularly going to the counter for 10 ones so they can carry on. Its not as though the jackpot is going to change they're way of life. They dont very often look happy. They're over the moon when hitting the jackpot but if they stopped to consider how much that jackpot had cost them they may think again but are likely to carry on and put some of it right back in. Each one to his own.

The trick with fruit machines is knowing when to play. It's sneaky, but in a pub always watch someone else playing the fruit machine first. If they collect a load of coins and then leave it's probably not a good idea to go on after them. If they walk away without any coins it's fair to say they've lost a fair bit, so get in there.

Easy to get addicted though; sometimes the thrill of winning £25 hides the fact you've put in £30 to get it!

A mate of mine does that, but he knows when to play the machines, as he works in the establishment where they are, and knows if they've dropped already.
