redrobbo
As to the Richmond residents' parking scheme that Lester_Bigot mentioned - That would be Richmond Borough council in London then? Not the district of Richmond in Sheffield!

d71146
I don't have a tv. Personal choice - have now been without a telly for over a decade now. Did you ever get bothered by the TV licencing Police my old mother did not have a TV in her later years but was continually harassed by them they simply could not get it into their skulls that she did not have one. NPB!
Just an excuse really, anything the government wants us not to do gets taxed to death until we can no longer afford to do it. I'm all for contributing towards a better environment, but unless other countries toe the line too, it seems a bit pointless
Cyclone
The telegraph was reporting yesterday that private citizens at the moment pay roughly 3 - 4 times the level of tax paid by corporations for every ton of CO2 they produce. Given that industry produces far more pollution than private households it seems fairly obvious that taxes aimed at individuals are going to do little to address the problem. neeeeeeeeeek
It will take China just 87 days to produce the same amount of Co2 as all the cars in this country! Our personal emissions are negligible in reality. I am not using that as an excuse as everyone's adds up but on the scheme of things taxing us out of existence won't save the planet. The fact that all the extra money will just be wasted does not inspire people, what would help are viable alternatives like affordable public transport but nothing new there. Ok so we don't tax those who make a personal choice to pollute more, ie large gas guzzlers etc and wreck the future of the planet for our kids. So can someone who is against taxing those who pollute most explain to me what SHOULD be done to stem our use of carbon in the UK

Mandem
I agree with neeeeeeeeeek, until other countries address their pollution, ie. China, India, Hong Kong, etc, out little country is but a drop in the ocean, and anything we try to do will make not the slightest bit of difference. But that does not mean we should do nothing, but raising taxes is not the answer, as other members say, will it be used to address the pollution problem or is it just another way of getting money from people.
