House removal advice/recommendations - no quotes/advertising

Hi,

Whoever you use, don't fall for the man and van service, we just did and should have known better. Always ask for a lorry unless you only have a few items, the smaller vans mean the men who do your move have to squash thngs in, we ended up with damage to some of our items. Also, he ended up doind 6 trips!! Took all day. When we mentioned claiming, he told us that the insurance he mentioned was just for his van!! We now live in Dawlish and have just used this joker to move across town. When we lived in Sheffield we used a local company with vans & lorries and when they visited to quote, they brought the insurance paperwork with them along with all their terms and conditions. We should have asked for the same this time. I'm sorry to rant but I'm so upset:(:(

We run a man and van service,we are fully insured with goods in transit insurance, public and employer liability (check before you book),but we can provide 2/3 vans with 2/3 men if needed for bigger jobs, some man and vans might be bad but the ones that are insured provide good service and good value, see our full advert in the business directory,

Cheers Dave 2 Men 1 Van

Fine words and well spoken Big Steve. Another thing to look out for is an 'Operators Licence.'

Only companies that have been fully checked out by VOSA (The old dept of Transport) can get these issued. In order to achieve an operators licence, companies must show that;

They have ALL the relevant paperwork, including insurance, for all their vehicles

All the vehicles are fully maintained

They have the financial back-up if things go wrong

They adhere to all the regulations and laws regarding the operation of vehicles

They operate from registered and inspected premises.

All the drivers are correctly licenced

Sticking to these regulations allows operators to be issued with an operators licence to operate vehicles 'For hire or reward', much the same as a licenced taxi. How many times are we warned not to book un-licenced taxis?

Man and van services can just set up, buy a van or two and hey presto! Run lorries (not hired ones) and you have to show you can do it honestly and safely. Check for other things like sign written vehicles (showing that they actually belong to the company and aren't just hired in), Vat registration numbers, being able and willing to accept credit cards (which provide consumer protection on their own) and landline telephone numbers and advertised addresses.

Use this web site to check details; http://www.tan.gov.uk/.../vosa_anonymousoperatorsearch_new.asp

Licenced vehicles display a blue or green disc in the window with the tax disc.

Hope nobody ends up in the same situation as 'Clubam'. Maybe this information will help.

We used VG removals Sep 2009 and they were great. Only charged £50 extra for a very heay upright piano. Started raining midway through move, just when sofa's and big pieces of furniture was going in- but managed to get everything in dry- covering it in heaps of blankets. They also but floor coverings down when it started raining so I didn't even have muddy carpets after the torrential downpour we had.

the 3 Guys were great, huge big lorrie, really friendly and arrived on time!!

Sorry you had a bad experience 'Clubam' but there are 2 things to rememer when moving house.

1. All your worldly goods are going to be trusted to the company you pick, make sure you have an address, land line/freephone number, and ask any questions BEFORE you move.

2. If you pay peanuts........you get Monkeys! If the firm is really cheap, think! How can they afford to pay wages,VAT,insurance, advertise, maintain a vehicle?

when work is tight in the building trade you get a flood of van and man adverts......

like you said you get what you pay for in this life....

Hi Steve, Tommy

Good to see the support for the big vans and the respect of the operators licensing, We hold the National and International operators licenses and I can assure it’s not easy to get, but easy to lose if you don’t run a tight ship, You are correct in what you say, you get what you pay for! there is a market for the reputable man and van, also cheap, uninsured cowboys, or whatever category the removal falls into (as Steve says “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys”) and that should dictate the price, but the difference is, in the market the man and van have should see his limitations and stand away from the larger more prestigious type of move, when the client wants quality of service piece of mind full insurance, packing service, etc... Leave it to the companies that know best, to charge the price for the service the customer deserves deserves.

There is one other point Tommy the BAR are also a good bench mark, and if you aren’t a member please let me know and the way you speak you tick all the boxes anyway, and I will try to help, but if you are a member good luck with the campaign.

Have a nice Day!!!!!!!!!!

We've also just used Avante Removals to move within Sheffield who were fantastic for the following reasons:

1. Cheapest fixed rate quote we had (also offered by the hour service)

2. Everything very clearly explained - what was included and what wasn't/could be hired etc

3. Anything we asked for prior to the move provided for quickly with no fuss

4. Really friendly service, Thomas was really helpful and gave us several tips for a smoother move

5. Really jolly and hard-working, hardly stopped all day, more than willing to help in any way we asked, even to advising me how to disconnect our cooker when I didn't have a clue!

6. Great care taken of all our belongings, no problems with anything at all

All in all an excellent service, very grateful to Thomas & all concerned.

I'm in the process of moving from Sheffield to Aberdeenshire. I borrowed a car to take a few initial bits (computers, etc), but am planning on hiring somebody for the rest of the stuff, mainly boxes and boxes of books, desks, shelves, etc. My main worry is organising being in Sheffield for the collection and also being in Aberdeenshire for the delivery. I suppose I'd have to drive fast enough to get there before they do, but I don't fancy an eight-hour drive after hours sorting getting the house emptied. Do removal people let you ride with them? Any recommendations? I've not had my license long enough to hire a vehicle or I'd just hire a transit and do it myself.

I've used both SBS and Avante in the last 6 months. Both did a great job, although I found that SBS tried to drag the job out, whereas Avante tried to get it done as quick as possible. Also SBS didn't use any sheets or mattress protectors to save the carpets and beds from damagage/muck - whereas Avante did.

Overall, I would rater use Avante again and only SBS if I had to.

i used Avante and they didnt use any furniture protectors and dragged the job out so my original quote of 3 hours stretched out to 6 hours which of course doubled the price - a lot more expensive than the fixed price quote i had had from SBS
