sheff6nic
we are moving up near the crown and glove pub area of stannington and wondered if anyone close by has broadband - we asked bt about the area but all thay could say was that we might be able to have it- apparently we are a long way from the exchange - can anyone shed any light on the matter and be a bit more specific? thanks

Go with BT,even it means waiting.
Rich
Hi... Might have problems with Broadband as far up as the Top House (Crown and Glove), we're just off Acorn Hill on Sky Broadband and it's a ruddy nightmare, half the time the flipping thing doesn't even connect! Been on Pipex, Wanadoo and Orange before though with little to no problem... Just avoid AOL like the plague, they're crap. If you can afford it, Pipex do wireless Broadband for £46 a month, they were great for me when I first got Broadband about 3 years ago, but obviously they became too expensive at £46 a month for a 512k connection, so I binned them in favour of Wanadoo (who were still Freeserve at the time). Pipex's exchange is in Shiregreen, which makes it odd that they can come this far up, when BT etc's exchange is at Wadsley Bridge and until 3 years ago you couldn't get Broadband from ANYBODY unless you were fortunate enough to be able to get cable/Telewest. chrisp7091
We're down on Greaves Lane and get a very reliable connection via Tiscali. Only 1mb for the time being, but we rarely have problems getting online. I used to work for BT and I think the top end of Stannington is on the limits of the exchange area. The exchange itself was right down at Wadsley Bridge when I worked for them. Dunno if its since been relocated.
satman2222
No -It's still near Fletchers. Pipex equipment is also located there, not Shiregreen.
Rich
No -It's still near Fletchers. Pipex equipment is also located there, not Shiregreen. Hmm, when I rang up to order it they told me their exchange was in Shiregreen...
Lancs_Lad
I also live just off Acorn drive. These are my current connection speeds ADSL Firmware Version 6.01.00.12 Modem Status Connected DownStream Connection Speed 1952 kbps UpStream Connection Speed 704 kbps VPI 0 VCI 38 I am with UKonline at £9-99 month (officially on 1mb connection). I had problems initially with low download speeds even though my connection was 1024kbps. (After contacting tech support they seem to have adjusted some of the connection settings and forgotten I am only on a 1mb connection:hihi: ).Anyway the point is if you contact UKonline they may be able to connect you at 1mb which officially is the best we should get in this part of Stannington. Shaun_A
I live on Oldfield Rd and at first had problems with my connection it kept dropping out but I my father in law works for BT and he sorted it out. He says that the old wiring from the exchange is not adequate fro the amount of usage in Sheffield in general and the further away from the City centre the worse it gets.
