hevydevy
Assuming all goes well, we should be moving home in the next four weeks or so. Unfortunately, our sofa isn't gong to fit through the door of our new house, so we're looking for someone to come and take the double galzed window out so we can put the sofa in, and then just put it back again. Does anyone do this sort of thing? Weatherglaze told me they could do it, but quoted what seemed like a bit of a high figure for what is essentially less than 15 minutes work... RazorSHarp
Get it done properly by one of the major firms. It's not a 15 minute job as they will have to remove the sealant from round the unit, take the glass out to get at the fixing screws that anchor the unit to the wall and then there is the cost of at least two men to carry out the job. Once they have put it in the then need to weatherproof it again with a new seal and maybe even replace some of teh beading etc. I reckon your looking at £200 + VAT from anyone. neeeeeeeeeek
It's not really 15 mins work though for a proper building / window firm. I guess you want it doing on a certain day and at as close to a specified time as possible, it's not like they can magic themselves in front of your window, pop it out then pop it back and disapear again! Try GowerBell, Stu fitted my windows and did an excellent job so he might be interested depending on how busy they are.
bluesandtwos
we were shown how to do it by our joiner friend, who happened to be fitting our new kitchen when the new suite arrived from DFS. DFS wanted £200 to do a 10 min job! Joiner literally whipped of the plastic bead strips with a rubber mallet and special 'window chisel' and I think thats all their was to it. Hes visiting this weekend if you want me to ask his advice, but dont think its a particularly specialist job, just requires care so you dont damage the unit
hevydevy
Well, WeatherGlaze managed to replace a whole double glazing window at my house last week in a little under ten minutes, it's just a unit that pops out, there was no rubber sealant or screws involved, just a special tool to pry it out, so I'd be suprised if it took longer than 15 minutes to do essentially the same task... cgksheff
There is a question of language and vocabulary here. Removing and refitting a window is a major operation. Removing and replacing the glazed unit from a window is something else!
Tripitaka
I would agree. Just taking off the plastic edging and then taking out the glass is not a big job. Taking out the frame, well that is another matter....
hevydevy
it's the bit where you just take the glass out, the whole frame does not need removing
hevydevy
Many thanks to chris412 who ended up doing this for me at a very reasonable price (absolutely *nowhere* near the £200 + VAT that other people suggested it would cost), turned up on time, got the job done in just a few minutes, perfect! thanks again!
