Kristian
They're actually traffic control cameras; they don't have the ability to photograph red light jumpers.

Strix
the sensors in the tarmac are to sense traffic, which is a right royal pain in 'tRs if you're a cyclist

Oh? http://www.roadtraffic-technology.com/contractors/photo_enforcement/gatsometer/ RED LIGHT The Red Light Camera RLC 36 ('wet film') and the Gatso Traffic Camera (GTC) both register red light violations and speed violations. The RLC is used for registration of red light as well as speed offences during red, amber and green light with two photographs taken. The RLC automatically adds the offence data to the image whilst the photograph is being taken. The data is stored on a memory card
Meaks
Oh? http://www.roadtraffic-technology.com/contractors/photo_enforcement/gatsometer/ The 'cameras' ON TOP of traffic lights are to sense traffic so they turn to green as appropriate. A red light camera isn't placed on top of the lights, they are highly visible cameras pointing towards the junction.
Strix
ah, ok, thanks for that
vidster
The cameras on 'top' of the lights aren't actually cameras but sensors. They pick up the lights from emergency vehicles and turn the lights to green to aid their response time. Thats what i was told from a friend anyway. Seems to make sense too
