Dung beetles in endcliffe park

did anyone read the flyers in and around endcliffe park last march, that they were going to release dung beetles to colonise there, in order to deal with the dog poo problem? they were supposedly going to live underground, be nocturnal and would die out naturally after 3 years. this was because they were only releasing females so that they couldn't breed.

seemed far-fetched at the time and have heard nothing since.........and seen not a single wee member of these beasties.....so maybe it was a prank?

What about releasing a potentiated, genetically engineered canine distemper virus instead? Then we'd be spared the sight of shiny gold and green beetles rolling balls of dog poo off the footpath whilst we drank our coffee outside the cafe!

errrm....was asking about whether the dung beetles thing was real GB, not how to get rid of dogs :)

I sadly can not recall - I think I read it in the Sheffield Telegraph so if you really need to know you might have to ask them for back issues of stories or the library.

I think the Friends of Endcliffe Park were duped and rather upset about it because it made them look at bit silly and had been corrected by some Professor at Sheffield University who said this was utter tosh ( but to be honest I could have got that confused).

If you find the story please update this post or PM me cos' I wish I could remember the story now.

The council have installed 'listening devices' in the park so chav conversations can be monitored at night. Apparently, they are cheap Russian devices and they don't work very efficiently. What the story should have said was, "Crap Bugs in Endcliffe Park".
