Mrs Goose
The goose family are planning to go to Castleton today and we want to go to one of the caverns. Can anyone recommend which would be the most interesting? - Sadly we can only afford to visit one. I like the sound of the boat one (Speedwell?) , but a friend has said that Treak is the best, and as we dont know anything about the others I thought we could ask the nice people on this board for advice. Thanks for any help
never wrong
it is all a matter of personal preference they are all pretty much the same but I would go for peak cavern
Tripitaka
I would also consider the fact that it has been raining for a couple of weeks solid now and alot of the caves maybe very waterlogged..... however, I would suggest treak cliff cavern. Meaks
Water logged shouldn't effect Speedwell.

Cynic
Castleton also boasts four show caves. If there is insufficient time to visit all of them, Treak Cliff should be the first choice. from http://www.derbyshireguide.co.uk/travel/castleton.htm - problem solved
harri73
I come from castleton origionally, my parents still live there. it depends on who you have with you of course if you have kids and I mean kids that arent in a pram or a toddler then I recommend peak cavern as you have to walk through it, plus its not out of the village unlike treak cliff, speedwell or blue john, also the entrance alone is an attraction in itself. A great place too have lunch is the Rose Cottage cafe, sorry had to get that plug in for my mum.
glennerster
I live in castleton and have done for over 20 years and i would say treak. Speedwell has the boat factor which is good for kids but no blue john and not very factual tour. Peak only has the big entrance and amusement factor as it has been re-named devils arse. Blue John has about a million steps So..................definately treak!!! Its got good tour guides, lots to see and isnt too far out of the village. If you've not been to castleton before i would also reccomend you visit the new visitor centre in the car park as it has been conpletely re-furbed and is quite factual and interesting. If you want any other info pm me.
PPB2709
How much does it cost?
glennerster
It doesnt come up on the website and as a local i dont pay but i think its about £5-7 per person. If you go on http://www.bluejohnstone.com which is their website you can get a 10% discount voucher. You could ring the shop on 01433 620571 and they will tell you prices etc though all the caverns are abou the same price so if your visiting one anyway....
