Cowboy window fitter

Recommended Posts

I would be grateful if there is anyone who has used a company called "Windowscene Co." based in Totley. This is a UPVC window installation company who claim to provide guarantees and a high standard of service etc.

It would be nice to know if anyone has any complaints and has been given very short shrift or told there is nothing wrong withthe job that has been done etc.

I have used this company and it is becoming my worst nightmare. My windows are poorly fitted to the point where one is falling apart after a matter of weeks and the rest plus doors need some kind of repair.

I am looking at a very large repair bill plus the possible costs of going to court to try and get some compensation.

I have been told that there is no alternative open to me because this person is NOT Fensa registered.

You don't have to be FENSA registered to fit windows and doors . Everybody seems to believe you do , but you don't , however the windows do have to meet building regs when fitted , you can contact 07771623872 for a chap who is actually working in Totley at the moment .

This is a message for Chris412. Thanks for the pm unfortunately I don't have enough posts to send a reply.

I am assuming that you are registered window installer. I may need to contact you if the matter goes further because I am going to need a proper written report.

After the top trim already falling down to reveal large gaps, part of the window sill has come off to reveal a bit of the old frame as packing which doesn't even fit, a few bits of plastic used as spacers and a couple of dobs of sealant. Apparently this is going to last! I don't think so!

Don't get too hung up on the FENSA issue , as stated you DON'T have to be registered to fit windows, the most important thing is that they are fitted right. Sounds like you have been ripped off, sad to hear but it happens , you obviously haven't payed for the install , or have you ?

Do not be lulled into a false sense of security by FENSA registration. The registration simply means the company can certify their own work. It is not the same as CORGI registration for plumbers.

You can employ a reputable building firm who is not FENSA registered but you will have submit a Building Notice and pay a £67 inspection fee to the Building Standards Department of Sheffield City Council. Once installed they will check the installation and issue a certificate of compliance.

How do I know this? simple our building company is not FENSA registered and we supply and fit uPVC double glazed doors and windows. Because this is not our main activity we find it easier to get our installations inspected by Building Standards than going through the process of FENSA registration. Our customers seem to like the idea of a third party inspecting the work, rather than us self certifying, and issuing the certificate. We have worked in this way since the new regulations came into force, from our conversations with Building Standards it appears FENSA registration is no guarantee of a good job judging by the number of compliants they receive.

Remember if a window company tells you it's against the law to use non FENSA registered people to fit your windows they are wrong and it could be another one of their hard sell scare mongering tactics.

Also after October 2006 all new installations must have 'trickle vents' installed. Make sure they are included on any specification/quote you receive.

mentioned above is corgi, i have been through the rigorous training that needs to be done just to be considered worthy of corgi registration let alone actually be cori registered and working. re-sit qualification every 5 yrs etc etc. so what actually happens when you apply for fensa registration. do you have to sit exams and be thoroughly quizzed of your knowledge.

if not then how do they ensure a uniform standard? how can they claim the job is done correctly if they don't have visits to jobs?
