pattricia
I know people are only just planting tulips now,but Ive never grown any because I thought you had to take them out every year, after flowering. But on Gardeners world last week,Carol Klein said that if you plant them very deep, you can leave them in all the time. But if you want to take them out(for summer bedding) plant them further up to the top of the soil.I would like to put some in but wonder if this is true.I thought if I didnt take them out they would just disappear eventually. Sultana
We leave ours in all the time. They seem to do fine.

Yellowrose
We leave them in, and they do fine for a few years but then seem to gradually fade away. They are planted about a trowels depth I would say, maybe a little less in parts. I just accept this loss as I cant be arsed to lift them and once in a while I put a few more in. My dad does just the same, but has less losses than me. His soil is totally different - light and limey - as he lives near the east coast.

When you say a trowels depth,do you mean counting the handle as well ?

Don_Kiddick
Sorry, that was norty. I've tended to plant mine about 4" deep & have not had any probs. they seem to reappear each Spring, and I've never dug em up again. An early feed of miracle grow when they start shooting usually does them a good turn

Patricia sorry for not being precise about the trowel, I meant the blade, but 4" is about right, its obviously enough for Don!
