Penderels
Does anyone know if anything is planned for Sheffield? Apparently it's normally the first week in December. Also, has anyone got any (constructive) opinions on it?
em2007
i always thought disabled people wanted to be treated as equal to non-disabled? what is the 'special day' needed for?
RichD
I'll be all for it if it can help make people aware that 'disability' isn't 100% synonymous with 'visibly obvious disability' - and there are plenty of disabled people out there struggling to cope with the world and some of them getting little to no help or consideration. dandy
i always thought disabled people wanted to be treated as equal to non-disabled? what is the 'special day' needed for? Because disabled people aren't treated as equal to non-disabled. So maybe having a 'special day' is a publicity tool to have events, provide information, and generally raise public awareness of the issues and the continuing inequality. purplepippa
i always thought disabled people wanted to be treated as equal to non-disabled? what is the 'special day' needed for? I think it's because that whatever we may want, we are *not* treated equally to people without disabilities. There's a long, long way to go! Lotti
as others have said, if it raises awareness I'm all for it! I think that's what they're aiming for em I have an invisible disability and constantly get dirty looks if I use any of the rights I'm given as a disabled person. (eg. disabled parking badge)
owdlad
i always thought disabled people wanted to be treated as equal to non-disabled? what is the 'special day' needed for? Quite simply it is needed to raise the awareness of non disabled people.
duckweed
Hey can we go and picket all the shops that are supposed to have access but don't and all the non accessible public transport and the so called accessible toilets that you have to search round for someone with a key. And where does a disabled parent change their baby? And how about all those shops that never have the wider checkout open? Or where is the so called easy parking for those with blue badges? Or the bins that are black and in the middle of the pavement so partially sighted bump into it? Or securicor vans that park across the pavement. Or when the match is at Bramall Lane all the pavements are blocked by parked cars? Oh No we don't need people to be aware. Lifes just hunky dory. Isn't it? em2007
everyone has different struggles in the world. yeah maybe we don't have the same as a disabled person but a disabled person is not affected by all those things either. there are a lot more things that people are less aware of which could do with some consideration, but we don't always get what we deserve in life do we?!!?
FairyNormal
I hope whatever is planned highlights the more 'invisible' disabilities such as Tourette Syndrome, OCD, Autism etc. There are a lot of misconceptions about such disabilities and a generallack of understanding about them.
