Disused public toilets on Commonside / Barber Road

Just across from the Dram Shop and the Spring Vale Pub are some old public toilets. They're built into the hillside, and have a rather attractive old stone frontage as part of the retaining wall along the side of the street. They've been boarded up for as long as I can remember, and have a fair number of fly posters on them now.

Does anyone know who actually owns them... it council property, or owned by the landowners 'above' (a care home?)

Thanks,

Was the Catholic convent above, at one time, now a mosque ? It seems a shame they cant be used for something or other.Im sure there used to be some near Walkley library, as well.Wonder why they closed all the Public toilets,I mean we still need to go,dont we ?.

I remember them as having two stalls and a WC - very small. They used to be next to MacKenzies' sweet shop with all those attractive jars from which you had 2oz of this and 1qtr of those! It was quite normal to get off the 95 bus and head for a pee!

That must be going back some years then.Mind if it was when the trams were running up Barber Rd, we would have time to hop off & hop on,if we wanted to.

No it's the old Commonside hospital - I think you're probably confusing it with St Joseph's on Howard Hill just as you get in to Walkley - and I think that is Buddhist rather than a mosque.

I remember the Walkley Library ones as well.

I would assume the council own them. The council flogged off a batch of 3 ex-loos last year (Abbeydale road next to broadfield and 2 others). Contact the council and see what they say, make an offer! Likelihood is that if the council wants to sell they will go to an auction, unless something gives them a good offer.

You're right... the toilets are futher south, on the corner by the shops and opposite from the jewellers. The old convent was sold to the Sheffield Budhist Centre after the Catholic Church fowled up their application to turn it into apartments. They were forced to sell it as a religous building and the Budhist Centre got it for a steal. I had a look round inside for the first time last week and was amazed by the size of it. Lots of weekday and weekend intros to meditation if you're interested.

Interesting that everyone thinks I'm starting a café... I did a design study a few years ago for the ladies toilets under the City Hall, just by the Peace Gardens... would have been a good location for a seedy darkly lit European style bar, but unfortunately there are just too many regulations and limitations to running a small independent bar in this country. That's why the monocultural chain pubs are so successful, they work like Tesco and can make a profit no matter what.
