bluesandtwos
My pussies are tinkle-free!. We only have one out of the 3 of them that ever catches wildlife, and a bell made no difference so now we dont bother. It tends to be fledgling birds in spring he catches , but have to say the WORST culprit here is my 3 year old Siberian Husky, who literally can snatch them out of mid-air :(
Strix
have you ever seen a dog try to catch a cat? Yes, there's the stereotype of the dogs that catch cats, but in reality how many dogs actually succeed? Cats are a lot brighter, faster and stealthier than dogs and dogs have a hard time keeping up with them! There's a couple of really nasty threads on this forum somewhere documenting this Lotti It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's messy I'd be inclined to believe that unless you fitted a cat with squeaky boots, a dog isn't going to be 'attracted' by artificial cat warning systems
Godzilla
My friend put a couple of large bells on her cat's collar so it wouldn't be able to catch birds. Then I spotted it in her garden - it had managed to lodge the bells under one of its front legs and was sneaking silently across the garden towards its prey! fox20thc
My cat had a beautiful golden collar with a lovely golden bell attached and was most unhappy about tinkling when he walked. He came in last night minus the bell looking most smug I have no idea how he did it because the collar is still intact.

Jabberwocky
My cretin has a little bell on his collar, it doesnt seem to bother him though, hes too fat and cowardly to do anything as dangerous as hunting birds so the idea of the bell warning them as he waddles towards them doesnt feature for him. SUPERTYKE
I know a couple of Lakelands that would, and nearly have killed cats - gladly maybe most dogs won't but do you really want to risk it? I know that my muts never fail to react, like me, - to a tinkling pussy! And even if dogs are too stupid to catch the puss it could scare it into running under a car. And surely it must interfere with the cats own hearing. Am I being over-protective??????????
SUPERTYKE
I'm intrigued by the number of 'veiwers' of this thread compared to those who have actually commented. Is it a case of a misleading banner? Or is it down to sewer mindedness??!! It seems that we brits won't accept advice from just anyone re the welfare of our children, - let alone our pets! Look at the pasting the press gave poor Jamie Oliver for having the audacity to infer that MacDonalds, crisps and fizzy drinks were bad for the kids!! Oh well, if thats how it must be - but remember the white cat I started this thread about? It was born black!!!!

And I knew a perfectly sweet and inoffensive little cat who was torn to pieces by a pair of passing GSDs, whilst in the garden minding her own business, and who didn't wear a collar at all. I also knew a cat that was loved so much that his owner didn't dare let him outside at all, and who chewed through some cabling whilst bored one day. The resulting electrical fire burned down a whole detached house, killed the cat and severely hurt the owner. There's only so much protection that any person can offer to their animals- it's a matter of playing the odds to keep them as safe as possible. I can (if I let my brain run away with me) imagine nightmare scenarios that result in my pets and family getting hurt from all sorts of perspectives. Doesn't help me one bit to do it though. There's only so much protection that any person can offer to their animals- it's a matter of playing the odds to keep them as safe as possible.. Some appalling accidents Medusa - awful. Though is it fair to keep an animal indoors rather than to allow it to enjoy a full life along with the potential risks? And we really must reduce the dangers to which we expose our animals when we bring them into our homes. We must modify, as we do for kids. I know that it is impossible to eliminate all of these dangers, but hard thinking is required here and a thorough understanding of the behavior of the animal we intend to aquire. (Pet college?) Minimising risk is what it's all about. For, of course cats and dogs will always remain natural enemies, but that's exactly why they would prefer to be inconspicuous!! Life is a risk - for all of us - perhaps a life skill is the (learned?) ability to identfy the 'real' risks and ignore the imagined.
