Hi,

My friend got me a ball of wool and this knitting needle thing that is platisc tubing with a needle on each end. I gathered that this makes some sort of woolen tubing or is used for broaches. She never told me how to use it (i dont even think she knew herself:loopy: haha) iv tried lookin for it on the tinterweb but i jus cant find out how to do it - please help!!!!!:help:

the wools been helplessly sat in my draw since May :(

Does the needle look something like this? If so, it's a circular needle and it's used for knitting in the round. So yes, that means knitting tubes (like a sock, for example).

If that's what you mean, let me know and we can sort you out with some instructions about how to use it.

Welcome to the knitting group, by the way  .

thats the exact thing!!! thankyou yes i wud really like instructions on what and how to make sumthin with it

Right, first off, just need to make sure you can knit. Daft question, but just to be on the safe side :) .

Second, what sort of thing would you like to knit? Circular needles can be used to knit all sorts of things, though I wouldn't recommend starting out with a pair of socks. A hat would be a good start if you've never used circular needles before, as there won't be a great deal of shaping.

If you want to use the wool you already have, you'll need to tell me exactly what it is. Is it still wrapped in the ball band? Have a look on there and it'll tell you what the recommended needle size is.

Then, you'll need to tell me what size the circular needle is (it should say so somewhere on the needle itself). You need to use the correct needle size for the wool you have.

Once I've got all that, I'll have a look to see what patterns I can find.

I wouldn't start with a circular either- the only place I ever found them much use was in doing collars and welts for jumpers and the like. They're just not my thing- I'm much happier with DPNs other than that.

I prefer DPNs too, though the first time I ever knit in the round was with a circular. I used it for a hat pattern, so I had to use DPNs at the very end to join the gap at the crown. A good intro to both types, really.

Could you tell me what wool it is? '7' is the old UK size for a 4.5 mm needle, so it could be that the needle and wool you have are perfect for eachother. Just need to double check though.

EDIT: Could you also tell me how much of it you have? How many balls?

Right, well as you say the wool is quite thin, then I reckon the 4.5mm needle will be fine.

So, what sort of thing do you fancy knitting?

How many balls of the wool do you have? Does it say anywhere on the ball band how much there is? It might say '100g' or something like that.
