shaz123
bumped into one of my friends today couldn,t believe what she told me, she was burgled last night while they were asleep, because my friend left her key in the door which is what i do ,the thiefs stuck their hand through the letter box and turned the key ,they took almost the contents of the house, all these years ive been keeping my key in the door i wont be now, the reason i leave my key in the door is if ever there is a fire its easier to get out of the door , there,s no stopping these thiefs ,
Joanna
That's awful. I know thieves can push the key out of the door and then hook it up from the floor but I never knew they could reach through the letter box and physically turn it! Thanks for the warning. *Banjo*
my sister in law got burgled a few years ago - she had left the key in the door and they put a pair of long nosed pliers in the keyhole from the outside, grabbed they key and turned it! munky
With respect, it doesn't take Andy McNabb to see the security flaws around the house. Basically, if its valued or expensive, then you don't leave it on the groundfloor. Have net curtains or blinds or keep ground floor curtains shut, so you don't advertise to passers by what you've got in your living room. Look at the house from the prospective that you've lost your keys and need to get into the house sharpish. You'll see all the easy access points. To be honest, leaving your keys in the door is just stupid and short sighted. If they get hold of these, then it's likely that they've got your car keys now too, so summat to drive away in with the loot. And you'll need to get the locks changed, cos if you don't, you have the risk of them returning again with the keys. Take your keys to bed, that way if there is a fire, they're straight to hand. Expect to be burgled when your in the house. Don't necessarily have weapons to hand everywhere, but having a decent doorstop or heavy ashtray near you could come in useful if someone in the house that shouldn't be. scoop
We have a hook on the door out of reach of the letterbox where we keep the keys, that way Burgler Bill can't reach them, and it would be easy to find them in case of fire.
Shazbat
Sorry but if you're going to leave the keys in the door you're asking for trouble.
BasilRathbon
Sorry but if you're going to leave the keys in the door you're asking for trouble. Exactly - surely it would be far more sensible to leave the keys outside under the mat, with a note attached to the door stating where they are just in case any friends pop round. I thought thieves were wise to that one, and use wire or something to retrieve keys and drag them through the letterbox. Like Munky said, taking your keys to bed is the best bet. It's a good idea to have your mobile with you upstairs too, so you can always call the cops if need be.
