WTAW
Hi does anyone know if the is an age limit for buying explicit music. My 13 years old son bought a System of the Down cd at the weekend which is labelled as parental guidance because of the explicit lyrics. A couple of the songs titles are not what you would want either, ie This cocaine makes me feel like I'm on this song and Violent Pornography. I would have thought that he wouldn't have been able to buy it without proof of his age and had been at least 15 years old. Any one got any thoughts? BobbyBunny
System aren't that bad, most of their songs are just called the things they are to distress the parents.. They have an album called 'Steal This Album'. But anyway No as far as I know there aren't any age limits... The parental guidelines thing is just to alert parents that they might not like some of the stuff on the songs.
Rich
Yeah SOAD name their songs with the specific intent of winding up the concerned parent and PC brigade. Crap way to sell records IMO, but if it works I suppose we can't knock it.
BobbyBunny
Oh and one of my friends was gullible enough to actually try to "Steal This Album", resulting in a year long ban from HMV. Edited to say: This was about four years ago, might I add.
Cyclone
SOAD rock, be glad that your son has good taste in music, he could be buying some pap from the latest boy band.

medusa
I don't think that music is covered in the same way with the licensing laws as video or DVD is. In fact I think the exemption goes as far as music DVDs not being covered by the age classification either. The question of whether it should be exempt is another matter. I don't quite know how you would enforce it, but I think the parental advisory voluntary system is a fairly good way of having a halfway house on licensing. Most children under 15 or so will have an adult with them when they're shopping, so there's one way of parents controlling what's bought, but I genuinely think that most kids have heard worse at school than what's in most songs anyway. EDIT- SOAD complete with swearing and dodgy track names is still miles ahead of some of the chart pap that's about.
nick2
Does anyone over 15 actually buy SOAD albums ?
BobbyBunny
Well I'm well over 15, and I do. EDIT - Well I did, but now I have them all.
Guest
SOAD are pretty politically active really. I'm 29 and have 4 of their albums tho the first is by far the best IMO. Seen em live twice a well and they are excellent. But saying that I haven't actually listened to anything by them in months and months.
