Religion and community

Recommended Posts

back in the day when people couldnt freely travel the globe, relgion was important for a community as it gave all followers a sense of belonging and there was a central building like a church or mosque where the community could gather.

nowadays in multicultral britain theres many people of many religions etc. should it not be an aim to create a building(s) to be enjoyed by the masses and for the community?

mosque's and church's in cities no longer provide "community" as they are segregated from the rest of the population.

Not sure that mosques and churches ever provided "community" but provided a place for a community that was built on shared beliefs to congregate. It was the shared beliefs that built the community not the building...

Cinemas, leisure centres, the plethora of town halls and community centres which can be hired out for various purposes?

granted these places are available but most are small, and few are of an interesting/spectacular design

You didn't mention that you thought the building's design was important in your original post. Should it be, if you're only talking about a community spirit? The glorious architecture of churches, for example, is meant to glorify God, isn't it? A community group could meet in a concrete prefab and could prosper just as well as if it met in York Minster.

Churches are involved and part of the community. Most of the hirings for our Parish Centre are by local community groups rather than use by the church itself. As a Pastoral Worker I represent my local church on various local forum and committee's and work for the benefit of the community with local councillors, police other Faithgroups Schools etc to improve the local area. The Faith Groups in our area provide a #Comminity Cafe at the Bus TerminusIn many places the local church hall is the only place avaiable for Community Activities. Yes there are other local communities at the pub, club sports complex etc but most churches have a real concern for the local community and individual churchmembers are part of the pub, club, spaorts scene as well as the local church.

Its not the churches that have seperated themselves from the community but the community that has separated themselves from the churches Churches and ChurchHalls are open to all but some dont want to participate for various reasons.

Aren't these already called community centres, leisure centres and memorial/village halls?
