K800i v N73 - the big dilemma

I'm looking for a camera that has a phone!

So having whittled the choices down considerably, it's either going to be the sony cybershot k800i (which, being a Sony Cybershot, I thought would be the obvious choice) or the Nokia N73 (which I expected to be the more user friendly phone/text machine)

I was informed at the local branch of Carphone Warehouse that the N73 doesn't do sports shots, but the K800i does, though the Nokia website says it does, and I couldn't find it on the phone itself. Sports shots are essential when taking pics of fidgety dogs ;)

Does anybody have either of these phones, and what are the good and bad points about each?

I upgraded to the k800i a few months ago and hated it! The only good thing about it is the camera, which for a phone camera is superb, but as a practical phone i thought it was awful......fiddly keypad, unresponsive joystick, crackly sound. I sold it and bought a Nokia N70 which i love! The N73 looks good, i' go with that

I've got a K800i, its alright. I don't ever use the camera though, I'd prefer to take my digital around with me and have decent photos.

I take the entirely different viewpoint from dan, everything else apart from the camera is great. The joy stick (like on all Sony's) is in danger of not working properly but I've had mine a year and its still going strong. Sound quality is great on mine as well, maybe dan was just unlucky? That probably hasn't been any help. N73 is newer (I think) and looks a better all round phone so I'd probably go with that.

I`ve had my K800i for about 4 months now and i really can`t fault it.

The cameras great as is the sound etc, if i were to deliberately find fault with it there`s only one that i can think of and thats the camera lens cover which keeps sliding open when it`s in a pocket.

I've got a K800i and it's excellent, camera quality is great and the auto focus along with the preset modes mean I can even take great pictures at 3am in a packed club while being slightly the worse for wear :) Lens cover is a pain though as it tends to slide open in your pocket as someone has already mentioned.

Being a Sony the sound and screen quality is expectional. Only thing I don't like about it is the stupid Memory Stick Micro (MS2) they've gone with on this model - my other SE phones had Memory Stick Duo which is annoying enough but now I can't even use the cards from them in the new phone. It would be much more helpful if they used standard flash cards but no doubt they make a fair bit on having people making MS Duo and MS2 cards.

It really is a camera with a phone stuck on to be honest, I've had digital cameras that aren't as good as this. The phone functions are similar to the other K series (K700i, K750i etc.) just updated a bit which is fine for me as the K700i I had was a decent enough phone.

If you do get one make sure you get a decent case for it as the screen looks like it would damage easily as it's so big. I've got a clear plastic 'crystal' case for a couple of quid off Ebay that stops it getting scratched when sharing a pocket with a bunch of keys.

Thanks guys :)

Nobody actually got a N73 then? :(

I love the crystal cases Fnkysknky ;) wouldn't be without one - hence not wanting one of those slide open phones. My current phone has only survived the last mumble years from being encased in one of these :)

Do you have to dig it out of its case though if you're taking pics?

Nope - you only need to take the case off if you are using the memory card - everything else is taken account of - the keys are uncovered, the lense cover is semi covered but not enough to get in the way of taking pictures. Just don't get the one from Carphone Warehouse as it's awful and broke after 2 days.

Looking at the spec of the N73 they're very similar phones although I'd expect the Sony to have a better screen, better camera and better sound after all it is what they've spent the last god knows how many years doing...
