How can you live in souless areas? (sothall, areas like this)

One of my friends lives in sothall and those type of areas aren't rough ( so this isn't another i live in a better area than you type thread or you're a peasant)

Its the type of suburb where everyone gets up, parks the car at the park and ride ,catch the tram, work, go home, bed.. The same houses for miles, no decent shops, no one about.

Compare this to ranmoor, you''ve got the busy parks, eccelsall rd 5 mns away, or before anyone steps in the other end of the spectrum is the same too! Pitsmoor isn't souless either, same as above, shops, people about. I just can't bear those "newish" 80s-90s estates, its like modern tower blocks to me...

I agree to a certain extent Claire28. We moved to Upperthorpe from Crookes in July and are looking forward to leaving soon. The house and area feels soulless, like you say. However, after living in Eccelsall Rd area and also London Road, I agree too with emperor_ming - Eccelsall Rd was really over-pretentious and in it's own way soulless. London Road was ace, very diverse and interesting, and had a suprisingly large community. We're off to Woodseats soon, it looks a darn site better than where we are now.

That's nice for you. A house in Ranmoor however probably costs about four times as much as a house in Sothall.

I'd rather pay 4x more- you pay 4x more to get to sothall by car. Your miles away from the city centre and anything interesting- no a sole around, it's such a boring area!

Most of Sheffield's 'sought after' areas further out seem extremely dull to me. Miles out of town and no handy amentities or much life. Maybe it's being isolated from the rest of us plebs that is the attraction? In some places there isn't even a shop for milk, bread and papers that you can easily walk to, you're driving the car for every journey you make (or having a long walk if you don't have access to a car). I need to be able to walk out the front door and hit a high street of some sort in about 5 minutes. Otherwise it seems like dull suburbia.

Is it? I don't see how you can account for the entire population of this suburb and tar them with the boring brush.

Unless you do know the ins and outs of everyones lives. Are you a nosey neighbour??

I find the statement quite ironic.

I have to say I strongly agree with Claire. I really don't like Sothall but thats just my personal opinion. I know a few people call it Sodall 'cuz Sod all want to live there. Anyway the reasons I don't like areas such as Sothall is that it all seems far too 'man made' (before the comments come back, I am well aware it IS man made) but what I mean by that is that the estates are quite like Lego land, the houses are boxy and too new and they all look the same, the trees seem to be planted in patterns and don't seem to have grown there naturally. It's just too set out for me. I also find the people I know who live there to be 10 bob millionaires. I'm sorry if I have offended any of you but I'm talking about people I know, it's not a generalisation. All in all I just find it a horrid souless place. It makes me sad to go there and find the journey horrid too. I know Beighton just round the corner and thats not too bad at least it has a bit of character. I also think that the schools around Sothall quite bad, my step daughter lives in Sothall and goes to Westfield school, I don't rate it. I just like a area which has character and soul and history. Sorry folks xx
