aussie80
hi all, our baby has suffered terribly from wind and gas since being born 4 weeks ago. we finally changed the formula he was on from cow and gate to farleys and he's been fine ever since. i know some babies are fine with cow and gat and i've got a full un-opened tub of it that i dont really wanna throw away. is anyone out there on cow and gate? it's the premium 1 formula in the green tub. i live in southey green and would rather give it to someone that will use it than throw it away. i dont have the store receipt or else i'd take it back. if you want it just let me. trish
Zebra
Wow, it's nice to see a generous offer like that. Our girls had Farleys once I stopped b/f and they did fine. They're on moo juice now so we're past the formula stage. Good on ya for making the offer!
Yellowrose
We had problems after Cow and Gate added extra prebiotics to their formula in ?May of this year. Our baby had been fine on C & G P but when they added extra prebiotics she had diarrhoea for 2-3 weeks and HVs and docs were no help. I finally decided it was C & G, phoned C & G and they said it was likely but give it a bit longer !!! I stopped it and changed to SMA and she has been fine ever since. I posted this on a parenting forum elsewhere and loads of people admitted their baby had a similar problem. Dont take offence, its not intended, but I wondered if the wind was connected with the prebiotics. If you still need to give this formula away, try the sheffield freecycle. I gave away some baby food on there.
aussie80
hi, not sure if it has to do with the prebiotics but whatever is in the formula didn't agree with him and since changing to farley's he's been like a whole new baby! lol we had our first evening with him wide awake after his feed without the screaming and crying that we used to get......was brilliant!!! thanks for the sheffield freecycle advice.....fingers crossed it get someone who uses it. would be a shame to throw it. trish
4Luca
can someone please tell me if I need to stick to the directions on the Cow and gate tin as far as keeping the made product.....'use within an hour of making it up'??????? Seems crazy to me as I spent 4 weeks on the NICU ward with my baby boy and they were using the ready made formula over a 4 hour period once the bottle had been opened. I am still feeding every 3 hours and it is such a mission to have to make the bottle before feeding a crying, angry little guy who is wanted food NOW!!! Because usually if kept chilled it should last 24 hours, or 12 at least. Have another read, perhaps. I used a different one, and I know it said somewhere 1 hour, but I believe that was if kept at room temperature, or after warming it once. I definitely used to make them and keep them in the fridge for up to 12 hours. Give C and G a ring, they are very friendly, and I rang them at least once, tho I never used their formula. They may be able to give you further help (tho they may have to stick rigidly to what it says on the tin).
doodle
I used aptimal formula and it said a similar thing - make up fresh each time. I didn't I decided not to as my parents and everyone I knew had done a similar thing to cosywolf, where they had made all the days bottles up for the day and kept them in the fridge without any harm coming to them. The new directions for making it up fresh came in not long before I had my baby (Aug 2006). I did it slightly different, I poured boiling water in to the bottles in the morning and left them on the side. When I needed a bottle, I put the right amount of powder in and gave it a good shake. My daughter had the bottles at room temperature, so no warming up. But on the other hand, my cousin whose son was premature, stuck to making it up fresh to be on the safe side. Do a search, as I think we have talked about making formula bottles up before and use your own judgement as to what you think is best. Found it, there is some good advice on here about the guidelines: The right way to make up and store bottles
cosywolf
Thanks, doodle. I set off on the crusade of the caffeine, and completely forgot about the old thread.
gina2007
My sister made up my nieces feeds in the morning, and just warmed them as she wanted them. When she went out though, she used to take the bottles of hot fresh water. Keep them in a bottle bag, then just add the formula whilst out. (You can buy lil tubs to keep in the correct amount) And just mix it up there and then.
Mathom
can someone please tell me if I need to stick to the directions on the Cow and gate tin as far as keeping the made product.....'use within an hour of making it up'??????? I am still feeding every 3 hours and it is such a mission to have to make the bottle before feeding a crying, angry little guy who is wanted food NOW!!! We use C&G, first the normal stuff and now Comfort. We've always made up bottles in advance - so long as they're not left more than 24 hours they are OK, though I normally don't leave them more than 12-18 hours or I chuck 'em. C&G Comfort has to be made with near boiling water so the whole thing with adding formula to cooled bottles just wouldn't work. To be honest as long as you clean and sterilise bottles and teats scrupulously and don't do anything daft such as give a baby a feed from an old half finished bottle, and you make sure to re-sterilise bottles if you've left some in the steriliser after making up a feed or two, you should be OK. I'd be concerned about adding hand germs etc to a feed if I was faffing about with a powder dispenser outdoors somewhere. I only ever warm a bottle if it has gone icy cold (rare as I do not put them in the fridge), as room temperature seems to be what babies like, which is what they get from breastfeeding after all! Some of the instructions on the packets are horrifically confusing and it's not right that you can't get any solid info elsewhere, though the midwives at Jessop thought this way was fine, so if it's good enough for them...
