babychickens
Howdo. I was just wondering what the usual lifespan for an average Household Spider was? Stupid question I know. In a normal house - maybe 6 weeks? (although i think females often live a bit longer than males) In a house with a cat - maybe 8 hours. my husband says i should look on wikipedia before answering questions taht i know next to nothing about, but i think that would take all the fun out of it. Lotti
In a house with our dogs, 5 minutes! In all honesty, I don't know - I once tried to do an experiment to see how long moths lived but I think mine would have survived longer had it not been kept in a jar with no food and then killed by my little sister... Did she murder them and hang 'em around her neck on a chain?
tslogf74
I've been wondering the same thing myself recently. It is several years according to this site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/348.shtml
AJ sheffield
Those big uns, Tengenaria gigantea can live for four or more years. Not sure about males, they will have much shorter lives though.
tslogf74
Sounds like the males live until they lose their virginity, whenever that is.
babychickens
quote off that website; "Males of the species are often found trapped in baths in houses. They fall in after wandering around searching for a female, and can't get out." so THAT'S what my husband was doing in the bath earlier. I had hoped he'd stayed in there voluntarily for a wash. Greybeard
Don't know about housespiders, but we've a shed spider been in residence for at least two years. Must remember to feed her this winter, - she was looking pretty thin last April
