Guest
Well I have to moan about this somewhere Bonus time at work so I decide to treat myself to my 3 yearly PC upgrade; Core 2 Duo, good Asus mobo, 2Gb good Corsair RAM, Radeon X1900XT etc. Put everything together and....nothing, no beeps nothing, gfx card doesn't spin down indicating a problem. Look in motherboard manual and this means send the mobo back so I raise an RMA with Scan. Mobo actually POSTs about 3 times but freezes each time. I try swapping out everything except the CPU and plugging nothing unnecessary in, so we've got RAM I know works (from dad's new C2D system I built the day before) and a gfx card which is displaying the screen I see now. Nothing...no beeps, foobared basically. Finally today it's at Scan and get RMA report....no problems detected! Yeah right, Scan don't seem to understand testing, had a faulty gfx card once and RMAed it, they said that worked too...nope. Have ordered the same mobo from Dabs so I can make sure everything is ok this weekend and find out if they're lying or not. The thing that really annoys me is that they can easily get away with this stuff....how do I know they actually tested it and how they tested it? I've basically told them to retest under stricter conditions. We'll see. Next time I buy a prebuilt one then if it doesn't work I can send the whole thing back! ...grumble, grumble...I just wanted a new PC
cgksheff
How much did this cost? Would you really have saved a lot more than buying a ready-made?
scarby
I'd like to build my own, bit by bit, but I have no idea how to go about it.
Guest
How much did this cost? Would you really have saved a lot more than buying a ready-made? For a C2D system yes.....even basic C2D systems cost in the region of £1k, this is with a crap gfx card, vaguely ok mobo, 1gb ok ram, crap hdd etc. I already have a good case, 580W Tagan PSU, optical drives etc, WD Raptor so don't need those. Total cost wasn't too much I don't believe. Going to overclock the poop out of it! scarby: It's not too difficult really, there's books you can buy about how to do it. Just have the confidence to follow through with the build. I've built at least 15 systems including mine many times, work ones, friends, relatives etc. It's just damned annoying when you get problems and haven't the spare parts to find a problem. Savannah2
The only trouble building your own is the cost factor, just can't get them as cheap has the big PC builders. Hope you get sorted, I'd be gutted probedb. I use Scan, you are refering to the one at Bolton ?...Never had a problem ......yet! Build your own PC

Dardandec
I alway's build my own systems, and have built them for friends and family too. I have built six sytems to date and have had very limited problems. I prefer this cause I can build it to exactly the spec I want. Most of the information you need to build and set one up is on the net anyway if you search for it, thats how I learnt and am still learning. The down side is the software, this can be quite expensive depending what you install but I only use oem stuff anyway.
Savannah2
i built my own and it cost a lot less then buying a shop one must have been lucky i guess Building a complete system is likely too be more expensive like for like if you take into account such things has OS(unless you install free open source) But the rewards are better, knowing you got exactly what you wanted rather than compromising with a retail PC.
